Friday 10 February 2017 – unsung heroes

February 10, 20173

I would like to recognise the unsung heroes who supply us with acronyms. They are the dinosaur age whose work evolved into SMS so we can walk around saying LOL and IMHO or YOLO and everyone knows what we mean.

We almost had in the 1990s the Federal Administrative Review Tribunal but someone stopped it just before gazettal. That would have been a good one. But not all is lost – I read about the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia  which has as its short form FARC – who is that approaching? FARC!

The short form for Bold and Beautiful – “BB” is good although not amusing. Because there is nothing funny about swimming.  Lots of dedicated swimmers here today who don’t want to waste time by telling me what their favourite acronym is because they are checking their SWOLG on their gps watches. We also have the SOTD (check out the pacific challenge page to see – today it is Chris Jessop who has swum since 2014. Congratulations Chris.

Rob and Fiona

some newbies, today there were 19

some bloggers from the inner west

Actual WOW with Fiona.

AlSO SEE FIONA’s HAIR. She is a real hero she is cutting her hair for Variety Club so that a lovely wig can be made for someone who needs it. I always admire Fiona’s hair and that she can get it into a cap and now I admire her even more – real HERO. see some more information below

Laveena’s birthday today.

Encounters with the early swimmers – mostly my encounters were of the head on type today because it was choppy

at the point

There were lots of these surging toward me today

I was wondering if they sting. Gareth – see below – was wondering too but came into contact to find that they do

At Shelly

Happy birthday Laveena – with Elaine and Megan

Last view of Fiona’s hair. She gets all of that hair into a cap.

DONATE TO THE CAUSE – MONEY IN PLACE OF HAIR

Gareth and Pat after surging through the beach to get to Shelly. Well done Pat. I hope the sting of the jelly fish goes away quickly Gareth

Karen and Emma. Karen has been away surfing for a while but picked today to return

What I have been reading: nothing. I have been fighting with Fairfax. I swam 1km and 2 km in the Cole Classic. A hot day and lots of waiting around. My timing chip (that is the one they gave me) failed and I was not recorded as having swum the 2km. Quelle Horreur! so I officered a print out of my GPS watch showing time and place of swimming. This of course involved me trying and failing to remember my password to the site and which email address I used. They have still not fixed it. I am desolated. I have a prospect of being recognised but what if I had not had my garmin on?

Staying safe
Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly! While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits.  Also, if you have a bit more experience, keep an eye out for new swimmers who might need company. Oh Elizabeth I feel for you last year Fairfax added 5 mins to my Cole classic time as they said I went in the earlier wave but I didn’t. Had to fight with them to get recognition for my correct place. This year equal time of 3rd place. Hmm no podium announcement had to go up and point out that I came equal 3rd now waiting for my plate and results to be updated. Is there anyone you swam with surely your photo will be on the end pictures what time did you do on your Watch I can have a look.

As I did not record with them as having started no photo appears for me either. My time was wrong for the 1km but I am not even tackling that. I am almost last so it is just about having it noted that I did it.

Thanks for the blog Elizabeth, entertaining as ever! Sorry to hear about your shenanigans with FairFax events, suggest boycott next year.I have done just that with their running events like City to Surf in protest at their money grabbing…try to support bona fide community fund raisers now. I asked Fairfax a while back how much of entry from City to Surf ; Coles etc. goes to charity and answer was nil…maybe the reason they make millions in profit for their shareholders? Oh, and their events are rubbish, zero value for money and force you to attend their pathetic ‘Expos’ to pick up your bib/chip…which are at some inaccessible place like Moore park…rant over!
