Sunday 16th: North Steyne SLSC Ocean Swim

The sea turned rough this morning. A few of our folks entered the North Steyne Swim.  Its bigger swim was a longer than usual 2.8, and return cans were out front of Manly Club’s beach front.  There will be a few stories about today’s event … from surviving competitors.  Don’t forget Summer Badges next Sunday...

Trying to touch the sun

5.55am the hour of the Baker. First light 5.45am, sunrise 6.15am. So in the hollow twilight of dawn we push out into an empty bay. Despite overnight rain it’s crystal clear. And the jellies aren’t seen till well past sunrise. Not for lack of light, just lack of jellies. Snoopy bounds out of the...

Good Friday 7 April 2023 Things we know

Today was a day to know your ability against the conditions. Waves – not massive but regular and biggish; a pretty strong rip and a bit of murk. Still very nice in.     We also know that the triple crown races were on today. Some contenders getting ready:   We also know that when...

Cloudy with a chance of blubbers

Siyabona and G’day Today was much like yesterday with swell building a bit today. Blubbers were sighted, blubbers stung and blubbers were avoided. It was a lottery. Waves were sizey. Some wild guesses at how many blubbers in the bay … 6.5 (Sean), about 3 ( The Driver and Master Baker ) a few avoidable...

Monday 3 April – a rainbow sky

Hi all   Happy Monday!! I had a fun swim with the 6.30am crew this morning. The water was beautiful – 19.9 degrees & lovely and clear. I saw so many fish and a massive wobbygong as we left the point. As we swam back in, it started raining (I love swimming in the rain...

If in doubt, swim it out

A chill is in the air The water temp decreasing Has summer already said goodbye?   Drinks Express never fail to rise, no matter the conditions. Creatures of habit (and a good one at that)   Flashing lights of red and blue, Sarah from Sales and Jon already in the water, heading north.    ...

Tuesday 28th March – You have to take the good with the bad

Morning darkness will soon end with the clocks changing on Sunday (except probably the Manly surf club clock which definitely has a mind of its own!) but so will those sunrises, which have been spectacular of late. Always hard to decide when’s best, summer, winter, in between… Guy’s chalk skills have also been spectacular recently,...
