Swimming win no stroke of luck
AMAZED AT MATE’S SKILL, UNTIL TRUTH TOLD
IT’S the prank that’s had Manly’s early morning swimmers laughing for weeks.

Bold And Beautiful Swim Squad buddies Shaun Dugong Denton, 51, and Rainer Dolphin Noack, 38, love winding each other up during the 7am swim from Manly to Shelly Beach and back.
So when the speedier Mr Dolphin challenged his pal to a race back to Manly one morning, Mr Dugong knew he couldn’t lose.
“I had a vision of the banter that was coming my way,” he said with a laugh.
So after swimming only about 10 strokes, he cheated by heading back to shore and running along the footpath instead.
“Rainer the Dolphin breathes to the right (when he’s swimming) so he never looks at the footpath,” Mr Dugong said.
The trickster got back in the water at Fairy Bower, swam the rest of the way – and won the race. He really rubbed it in too. “I did plenty of trash talking,” he said.

The lads raced once a week for about eight weeks and Mr Dugong kept on running – and winning – to Mr Dolphin’s increasing puzzlement.
More than 300 of their fellow swimmers were in on the prank. A secret Facebook site called “Racing Rainer” shared ideas on how to keep the joke going.
“We decided to start feeding him propaganda about why I’d improved so much in a short time,” Mr Dugong said.
“We told him I’d learned a secret kick that only the Australian swimming team and myself knew, and I was on a special diet of dried seaweed and mung beans.”
“He enrolled in swimming lessons again and he was training really hard.
“By the end he had dropped his rash vest to get an extra bit of speed.”
The big reveal finally happened at a Bold and the Beautiful Badge ceremony.
As expected, Mr Dolphin took the joke with great humour.
“We’ve been bantering for years so I knew he was a good sport,” Mr Dugong said.
“But I’m sure I’m going to cop it now!”
Mr Dolphin agreed he was working on a good-natured revenge.
“It has got to be something amazing,” he said.

Clarification 1/ Names – Dugong, Dolphin is slightly different to that printed. 🙂
Clarification 2/ No I don’t go whispering into Rainers ear.
Clarification 3/ At no time was it stipulated to be a swimming race. It was a race. Cunning was also included in the rules and I take offence at the term cheating. I just didn’t share my racing tactics with my opponent.
