Learning to dance in the rain

19/08/20250

The weekend was drenched in sunshine, the kind that makes everything feel light and alive. I took a long swim out to Freshwater and back, snorkelled in the bay where the water shimmered with colour, and clinked champagne glasses with friends.

Sunshine has a way of making life feel beautiful — the ocean sparkling, laughter spilling out, and time unfolding without effort. Those days feel golden, and they stay with you.

And then Monday arrived, we were wrapped back in the grey skies and steady rain. The streets glistened with water, the air turned sharp, and the whole mood shifted. These are the bold days. They’re not carefree, they ask more of us. Rainy days are a reminder that beauty isn’t the whole story — there’s strength too. It’s bold to face the heaviness, to keep going when everything feels a little subdued, to find meaning even when the sky doesn’t lift us.

It struck me how much this mirrors life. We all move through stretches of sunshine, when things feel easy, joyful, and full of light. And we all face seasons of rain, when the way forward feels heavier, uncertain, or just less colourful. But one without the other wouldn’t give life its richness. The sunshine teaches us to celebrate beauty; the rain teaches us to be bold, to grow, to endure. Together they give us depth, balance, and contrast.

Maybe that’s what it really means to live boldly and beautifully. One of my favourite quotes is “is not waiting for the storm to pass, its about learning to dance in the rain”.

The rain will pass, as it always does. The sunshine will return, brighter for the pause in between. And when it does, it will feel all the more beautiful because of the boldness we found in the grey.
