15/03/2014 – An different perspective

15/03/20145

Good Morning from Drinky’s Express.

I thought that I would get in the water early today and see things from a different perspective.  I managed to get a few quick pics in before the swim.  It is dark out when you start at 6:30 at the moment, but it is a great swim, swimming towards the sunrise as you watch the sky change from purple to pink to red then yellow.

The only difference being is that you can’t see many fish at this hour as they sun isn’t shining through the water yet.  It seems I didn’t miss much today though, as the rough swells stirred up the sand.

There were still large smiles to be had at this ungodly early hour.

As we head on down the ramp we were happy to be greeted by warm waters.

Meeting at the point.

It’s amazing what mystical creatures you can find in the ocean.

The views on the way over to shelly are great at this time in the morning.  Part of my reason for wanting to do the early swim.

Drinky giving instructions about the rough surf and also giving us the heads up on tomorrow.  The swell is supposed to get up to 6ft with the winds being a NE.  Looks like it’s a day for those who want a challenge tomorrow. What an informative leader you are.  Nice one Drinky.

And Oh no, he spotted me.  I usually like to remain anonymous behind the camera.  Not one being known as a blog tart but happy for the blog tarts to help me out.

And off they go.

Some of us are a little slower and tend to sit back and wait for everyone to leave.

Storchy, Toni & I took a long time to swim back, enjoying the warm water and dog paddling most of the way while having a chat about the expensive real estate that is being sold and built in Fairy Bower along the way.

The sun is rising just in time for the 7am swimmers to start their swim.

Here is the 7am group meeting at the point

Lucky for me a took a few shots yesterday when the water was a little clearer and much brighter.

This is what the 6:30 crew do while everyone is out swimming.  Coffee’s all round and chill out time.

So becoming of you Mark

Laura & Jasime had a small bedroom sale this morning.  All proceed were going to Royal Far West Hospital.  You go girls.

It was Nikki’s birthday today.  Happy Birthday Nikki.

The dogs love a bit of attention.  With Oompa demanding most of it.

Our favourite time of the day.  There are so many of us having breakfast at the benches now, it’s a great time to catch up on our weekly fix.

Stats:

Swimmers: 250

Newbies: 18

Water Temp: 21.7 degrees

Sunrise: 6:54am

Sunset: 7:14pm

Have a great weekend everyone

Lovely blog Renae! Really nice to see the swim from the 6.30am perspective for a change and it does look beautiful with the sun rising as you swim. I definitely want to do it now before the clocks go back. Love your photo of the leatherjacket particularly. They swim away so fast when I point the camera! Well done Jas and Laura. I hope you are selling the leftovers tomorrow! Ted and i love our pink bracelets!)

    Early swim, early blog..Go Renae!!
We’ve all been lulled into a bit of a false sense of security over the last month with beautiful calm conditions in our little bit of ocean. But it is an ocean .
If you are bringing friends for their first swim PLEASE stay with them and make sure they are ok. Sometimes they’re not, and what should be a nice experience turns into a terrifying and potentially dangerous one.
Stay safe, makes for a happier day 🙂

Beautiful early morning conditions with glassy, rolling, gentle waves… lovely shots, Renae.
Agree with your excellent comments, Nurse J – essential to look out for others, especially newbies, before, during and after our magical swims to keep the group safe.
Just turning around on reaching the Point or returning to the beach may make all the difference when it comes to seeing someone needing help.

Great blog. What skill being able to bring a fresh look at a daily swim. The 630 swimmers are really excellent swimmers!
