13/7/15 – Intensity and Repetition

13/07/201514

Learning something new, it is said, occurs though intensity and repetition.

When a group of people come together, people from different places and different walks, those who otherwise might not fraternise, and you see them doing so with such joy and solidarity, even during inclement conditions.  It’s a reminder that there is something else going on here.  That beyond the stories we are told, there is a deeper truth to learn.

A truth that exists in all of us, waiting to be remembered.  Once remembered the learning is easy…

B&B Monthly Dinner  – TOMORROW NIGHT!

Tuesday 14 July @ Bluewater
Our next speaker is David Walton.  David was in charge of the internal affairs operation into the Manly Police in the noughts.  This was a time when a few locals (law enforcement and colourful identities) were put before the courts for corruption related activity.  David has the inside “underbelly” story of what “went down” and the technology used to catch the culprits.
Don’t miss it!  Book here now!

Staying safe
Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly! While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits.  Also, if you have a bit more experience, keep an eye out for new swimmers who might need company. Do read these excellent tips on staying safe in the surf. To read, or even download, click here.

16.6 degrees ! Yikes its fallen two degrees in a fortnight. I heard there were lots of jimbles today. Great opening thoughts MH. If only you had continued and told us what that magic element is that binds such different people – perhaps we could export it to make the world a happier place with less conflicts.in any event, just v grateful for its existence at B &B central

    Hi All,
just wanted to throw in a few comments regarding the jimbles today. I am the nutjob who was hollering and waving my arm in the air at the point at 7am.
We headed out at 6am, and felt a few zaps. There seemed to be a combination of Hair jellies and something else so we decided to continue on, heading out wide on our return lap.
Danny Lucas and myself headed back for a second lap and encountered a couple of jimbles: we just navigated through them with the odd sting, nothing serious. Again we headed out wide on the way back, though we did this time notice more jimbles.
My strategy is just to breastroke so that you can see them. The worst stings occur when you are still, or they go into your swimmers, so breastroking is a good way to see them and avoid them. However, as we veered into the point, we realised that a really concentrated swarm had emerged. There was a concentration of about 30 per square meter, and a long stream of them about a metre wide for quite some distance like a Wall of Horror.. I spent about 15 minutes gently paddling and looking for a gap to duck through, with no luck. i’ve never seen anything quite like this before: and all of them were actively swimming along like the Jimble Apocalypse of Death. There seemed no way though.
I had been in the water over an hour by this stage and sitting in the middle of a jimble apocalypse wasn’t what I had planned for the day. The 7am swimmers were heading out and I tried to warn them. I raised my hand hoping for the rescue board, but nobody seemed to notice, in fact one very sweet lady came paddling over towards me to help, thinking I was drowning, and swam straight into the swarm. I was pretty disappointed that none of the board paddlers noticed my waving arm!
Eventually a small path was cleared thanks to an unsuspecting wetsuited swimmer(thanks) and Scotty Mellis directed me though. PHEW!
I only have one bad sting which I have treated with Rapaid Cream (available from Coles) and am lucky not to have had a worse encounter but I was pretty cold by the time I emerged from the water.
Thank you to Alex Prendergast for the offer of Antihistamines and to Storch for the offer of painkillers. ( I was fine)
If you see someone with their hand raised, best thing is to inform the surf club rather than try help yourself. A rescue board would have been just the ticket to freedom I needed!
Tomorrow shall head north, and wear my high necked swimmers. Hope everyone else managed to dodge the little Minions of Satan.
    best wishes
    Fifi

“Jimble Apocalypse of Death”! I want to read more. Can we please have another instalment tomorrow? I am not wishing for more jimbles, just more story from Fifi.

A HUGE Thank You to the fabulous returning 6:30am crew who warned us 7AM’rs of the coming Apocalypse. So, per the pipe photo, a few of us did head north as a result – and not a single jimble sighting either way. Let’s keep the communications going!
