Fishhhhhh and Yellow Tails for Dayzzzzzz
Rusty and Caroline’s Pitch Report.
5.30am morning, 9 degrees but it feels balmy. The smell of summer is in the air. Clear skies. Not a breath of breeze. No chalky awake, but I’m picking 18 in the water. It feels a bit crowded today on and off. Some swell at north end, and some desperate, despondent surfers. High tide. Rounding the point and the express train runs me over, go pro snapping. I think the one with big feet was Drinksy, maybe Duncan out in front? A procession of swimmers coming from the shed, ominously no-one in the middle. Looking north also plenty of swimmers. Jimbles out there in the middle. Crisp like an icy cold Riesling, just as enjoyable!
In the summer holidays at Uni, I worked at Fremantle Aquatic Centre, cleaning pools and toilets. On the other side of the Olympic pool, sat Aqua Thrill-way a twisting maze of water slides. My mate Frank ran it. At night after the public went home, we would grab pizzas and beer, and get a bit adventurous. We found that if we put the water flow on the slides on ‘trickle’, a fraction of the flow, we would go down about 3 times faster (something to do with resistance).
Today in Cabbage Tree Bay, I had that sensation again. With the flat and amazingly clear conditions, we were swimming faster than humanly possible, with the vivid world flashing past full of life and excitement. There were whales in the distance, cuttlefish, Port Jackson sharks, beautifully bright Jimbles hovering in the middle (Caroline volunteered to seek out a photo), and a colourful rolling landscape on the sea floor.
Well, the rain exploded with a mighty crash, As we fell into the sun
And the first one said to the second one there, “I hope you’re having fun”

“I do not fear you. I just dread you” Bravely entered the territory of Don Jimble – he allowed me to swim away unscathed
Whales on the horizon!
Thanks for the swim Team, enjoy the day! Silver splits the blue, love will see us through
