09/04/13 – On Being Pink

09/04/201323

As the number of
people who have swim under the Pink Cap nudges 5000 – what does it mean to be
part of this particular (and at times peculiar) swim squad?

Mingling with the 147
swimmers this morning, the opportunity to share a unique experience with
someone special was a frequent theme.

Daring friends to join you, catching up with mates or making new ones as we disrobe, tick and ponder the conditions has a buzz that creates its own brand of chaos.

A bit of a challenge
for the stewards of the swim!  But don’t
they love it 🙂

And to be truly Pink,
you do have to get wet.  Not a problem at
23.1 degrees.

The chatter continues
as the squad makes its way to the point – which is sometimes a little deserted
in the excitement to get to Shelly.

I wonder if this is
how the fish see us as we hang about waiting for the ‘Let’s Go’. . .

Being Pink also means
sharing the excitement of fish spotting. If you were really lucky (thankfully
Nick was on hand taking his magic photos), this is what was spotted today!

While some seem to
race into Shelly, others take their time. After all, the daily Pink prize is
just being out in the ocean with a bunch of people getting their endorphin fix
for the day.
The gathering at
Shelly is always good for photo opportunities – or in some cases – having the
camera avoid some obvious subject matter!

While again the serious swimmers head back to the point – I never manage to capture this mob – out the back discrete groups form around the bay.   Some are fish spotting, others are just hanging out and chatting but today there was someone making a job application video!!

It’s not all in the
water either!  The Pink party too!  Like tonight at Bluewater – the gathering for
the monthly dinner is sure to raise the decibel level.

Special congratulations
to John ‘007’ Bond who has nudged into first place on the Pacific
Challenge.  Sorry Michael, you really
will need to swim soon. . .

Now swimming with the Pink squad has other benefits – very special discounts and offers
from our lovely sponsors.  They support
us so do check out what is on offer for just flashing your B&B Card.  Don’t have a card?  Slip Lesley $10 after the swim for your own
passport to Pink benefits heaven.

Catch you soon.

Mary

For the diary . . .

Lovely blog Mary! But Tuesday blogs are always high quality. And how good to see some pictures for a change. Please give Rob a refresher on how to upload photos.
Water temperature is just perfect at the moment. And nothing but light offshore winds for the rest of the week. Really doesnt get much better than this!
Great to meet Eric! Who kindly provided me with my only real blog tarting opportunity today.. Thanks Eric!!!

Mary: thanks for another lovely blog – and for the pic of my gorgeous daughter Lucy. It was a truly beautiful swim … I was very excited to see two big gropers this morning – one at Shelly and one at The Point.

Slow Lips: you look so … well … what’s the word … “normal” in today’s photo. So unlike your usual #*&@%-blog-tartiness!

Looking normal can not count as blog tarting. I’m sure the definition is covered in the rule book.

I assume by ‘#*&@%’ you mean ‘charming’?

Sorry for the typo: that was meant to say “your usual splendid-blog-tartiness”!

Beautifully worded and crafted blog, Mary.
Lovely sensitive images with beautiful pastel colours vivaciously dancing across the screen.
    Unfortunately no images of me.
    6/10.
I’d also like to thank the beautiful Fifi for speaking up on my behalf recently.

Lips – I think you are a bit light on the photo bombing these days. Just merely standing with your arms around anyone that will oblige is a bit tame ???

Mary – great photos – glad you could work out the technology! Poor Rob.

Blog Spreddy Update – new in without yesterday’s numbers!
LSA – still steaming away with her 69 point lead
Lips is nipping at her heels with 56
Skinnie Swim Stephen has a respectable 43
With the higher duties of having to be a blogger myself my rating have dropped considerably!!

I saw a HUGE groper this morning.
He was hanging just off the point wearing a white top.
I still get him mixed up with the goat fish!!

More seriously though, I guess it’s for similar reasons that we feel safer swimming with other people, the more the better. If there are 10 people, your chance of being taken by the shark are only 1 in 10. The tiny fishes swim in enormous schools, but the larger fishes, who are less likely to be attacked, or can escape fast, are often solitary or in smaller groups.

I know what you mean DWSS. Goat fish are known to be extremely handsome and charming. Oh, and humble too. Superb species.. a great catch one might say.

my theory is that predators do not usually attack things bigger than themselves. Which explains why I am always drafting off Drinks’ feet, it creates the impression of one very tall sea critter.
