8-6-2017 WORLD OCEAN DAY – Passing the ‘lookback test’

08/06/20178

Moody morning…..not quite the most inviting ocean

It was pretty dark at 6.15am this morning …pre dawn on World Ocean Day 2017

Well, there were not many about this morning …..

Greg and Drinky – contemplating the dark and the light

We arrived to the marvel of a dark, moody Manly.  Today is World Ocean Day,  a global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future. It is a pretty good day to think about the our Ocean. People talk about treading lightly on the earth, to protect and appreciate it.  What is the equivalent in the ocean?  Is it swimming with care in our ocean? and caring for our ocean through actions in our daily life?

Waste reduction and sustainability has been a hot topic in our car trips from Cammeray over the past few months. We love swimming at Manly, in Cabbage Tree Bay and we know we are lucky, as our waters are relatively clean (not perfect but…). Even before Craig Reucassal’s War on Waste we have been inspired by our lovely and motivated Jackie, to think and do more about the choices we make in our daily lives. Small actions by many have the potential to make a real difference. So we are all bringing a keep cup – no more take away cups. Takeway coffee cups are not recyclable due to their plastic coating, being aware of packaging, no single use plastic bags – there is much we can do, small actions, done by many can create a huge positive impact.

In the world we use over 300 million tonnes of new plastic every year.  Half of this we use just once and usually for less than 12 minutes.  8 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in the ocean every year.

Over many years, as this plastic waste is carried along by ocean currents, it breaks up into tiny pieces.  So much is getting into our ocean that in some places these plastic particles outnumber plankton by a ratio of 26:1.(www.plasticocearns.com)

This years theme for World Ocean Day is

“Encouraging solutions to plastic and preventing marine litter for a healthier ocean and a better future.”

Maybe as a group the Bold and the Beauitful – we could say no to the take away coffee cup, maybe we could start today.

It is something we can all do…just an idea…..and thank you Jackie, you have given us all a good poke in the ribs and we love you for it.

Let’s do something …starting today …!

“Drink in ” like Clare and Ali or here is the lovely Jo modelling her lovely Keep Cup”

Do your bit to look after our ocean and have a beautiful day, if you have swum, you have already made the most of it.

Great Blog on such dull day
Can’t quite believe 68 people got out of bed and threw themselves into the ocean. Takes all kinds 🙂

Agreed re. ditching the single use coffee cups – always frustrates/saddens me to see so many B&Bers, who clearly love our ocean (they spend enough time in it!), finishing their swim, drying off, and then buying a coffee in a disposable cup. Going totally ‘green’ is not within every person’s reach due to financial/logistical pressures, but making little changes in your daily routine in order to help reduce the amount of waste we produce each year is so easy. C’mon guys and gals, if you can afford to buy a coffee after every swim then you can afford to buy/bring a reusable cup – there really is no excuse.

I thought that there was one new chap. An American chap with the girl in the Stars and Stripes cossie?
It was a cracker swim, though. I always really like days like today. Maybe it’s because the expectations are low, maybe because of the lovely glassy surface that the bay gets on a rainy day, or maybe it’s the gorgeous deep turquoise hue to the water, but it was one of the highlights of the winter so far!
    Have a great day!
