31/01/13 – Crack of Dawn ;-)

31/01/201324

Only 77 Bold and Beautiful swimmers  swam today, on a misty, magical and marvellous Thursday morning!

The surf was huge with thumping waves crashing way beyond The Point and ‘dolphin divers’ ducking under the waves would have had a faceful of seaweed! It was definitely a Halfway Day again today for most of us…

Sun was late rising through the mist today…I was up at the crack of dawn to witness it all. I got a crack of a different kind as I caught Alex putting in some practise for the Sydney Skinny Dip photo shoot at Cobblers Beach later today! (All welcome 3.30pm!)

A few would-be Bolderdashers had to come back early as the pounding surf was even a bit woolly for some of them.

It was Wilf Deck’s 78’th birthday! He is a B&B Legend with 120 Triathlons under his belt and a narrow escape with death after ending up on the windowscreen of a giant truck a few years back. His bike helmet saved him. Still  a favourite with the ladies as you can see below.

The dogs are chick magnets too!

We watched a few bold and very strong swimmers getting hammered, I mean navigating the wild surf. Well done Drinky, Naoko, Richard, Iain L and Sarah from Sweden! We were worried you swimmers were going to get thrown on to the rocks.

Here are the first two to brave through that surf.

The rest of us proudly walked around to Halfway Beach.

And had a more gentle entry in to the ocean.

Waiting for ‘Let’s Go!’

And we swim to Shelly…

That morning mist is hanging around and getting in the way of good photos.

Blog tarts trying to recreate the scene from ‘From Here to Eternity’.

We sing Happy Birthday to Wilf and wish Dermitt, Bon Voyage back to Ireland and it’s swimming back to Halfway!Photo of D and Orla below and our Wilf.

A few waiting at The Point

Yes that was Stephen’s photo! Unfortunately mine are coming out blurry and now I can’t blame it on the mist!

Another great swim. There were no stingy things, Bondi cigars or huge waves from Halfway Beach. Come on back and join us folks!

Unfortunately visibility is still poor but check out some of Mauricio’s videos and pics to see what beautiful marine life does await us at Cabbage Tree Bay.

Mauricio found this moray eel lurking in the rocks recently…It bears a striking resemblance to Michael Christie …

Jane has sent some of Mauricio’s stuff to the Australian Museum. A note from her here.

This is from Mark (Head of Fish collection at the OzMus) re Mauricio’s Wobbe video:

“The movie is now embedded on the species fact sheet on the Australian Museum website – http://australianmuseum.net.au/Spotted-Wobbegong-Orectolobus-maculatus-Bonnaterre-1788/ and on the Museum’s ‘All Things Fishy’ YouTube channel – http://youtu.be/OZXEnRFduXI.

There are heaps of fish species on the AM website that lack good video.
If you have movies of other species that currently lack footage, I
would be VERY interested to hear about it.

Again thank you very much. I’m delighted to be able to show this lovely footage.”

Once again congrats Mauricio! And I’m sure all you fab photographers
have noted the invitation to submit video. If you have anything send it
to me (and put it on the blog of course) and I’ll make sure it gets to
Mark.

The surf was dangerous today. Please read Michael Christie’s tips! With all this weather it is a good time to note that it is so important
to swim within your limits.  Michael Christie’s tips on how to stay
safe are an important feature of the blog and are invaluable. These tips help beginners and advanced swimmers
alike – Please read it here or read it again if you already have!

Stephen is really desperate to get a B&B contingent for the Sydney Skinny Swim! A note from him here:

If
anyone’s interested in doing the Sydney Skinny photo shoot for the
Telegraph can you let me know – stephen@iswimtoo.com Please tell them 3.30pm at Cobblers Beach, Middle Head. The more the merrier!!
The shoot should only take 30mins – and they want get some shots of
people running nude into the water from behind (no faces/or front bits)
and then a couple of above the water shots with swimmers in the air…
waving smiling… pink caps on of course!

Please give them my phone number if they want, as I will be down there with the photographer…

Kind regards,

Kate Hughes

A few B&Bers are swimming The Cole Classic this Sunday. The 7am swim will go from the Harbour on Sunday so we will meet at the end of Ashburner Street.

Just thought I’d include this thank you from Chris Noone in the Aus Day Blog comments. Remember Team Aiden are swimming The Cole Classic this Sunday. A bunch of kids 9- 12 years pushing themselves out of comfort zone and raising money for cancer research.

A
big thank you to everyone who supported Team Aidan in their swim with
B&B today. Anna & Nick for the blog mentions, Ian for smoothing
the registration process, Drinky, Shaun A. and Slowest Shaun for keeping
an eye on the back of the pack (perhaps Slowest Shaun was just swimming
normally, I’m not sure) Also to the people who have already supported
their fund raising efforts. If you want to join them, click here:

And finally a few comments to keep you up with the gossip and let you know what the sea creatures are saying about us! If you aren’t sure what any of it is about, read the Blog comments!

The cartoons are fantastic Elaine! Well done! Unfortunately I’ve been washed out with a touch of whooping cough! Which means ZERO training for Cole Classic on Sunday.
Good luck with the skinny shoot today …..I just couldnt make it, what with this cold and all that!

Team Aidan will be at the Corso this Saturday 8am – 10am raising money for the the Kids Cancer Project, while they taper for the Cole Classic on Sunday. Drop in to see them on the way to Bluewater for breakfast. Judging by the surf today, they will need all of the encouragement they can get!

Happy Birthday Wilf! You’re a legend and someone to be inspired by!
    E-laine, Crack of Dawn???
    Who is she?
I know we have a few Builders that swim with us but yet to meet Dawn………….
BTW, I’ve just used one of the builders who swims with us and want to recommend him to all Pink Caps. Shaun Denton (who turned 50 yesterday) is a top builder and leak detection specialist, I was very happy with his service.
PS: I hope its ok to plug someone on the blog.

Common Pink Caps get behind these kids!
Donate some money – not only is is going to a great cause but these kids are putting themselves out there for others!!!
    HOW GOOD IS THAT!!!
Support these kids, they are having instilled into them by Chris N and others a selfless community spirit, and who knows you may know someone that may benefit directly from their cause one day!
Throw a few shekels at them Saturday
