28/11/2015 – Rock ‘n’ roll for the Julie and Matt show

28/11/201510

The rumours had been floating around for a while.  Founder Jules, who had slipped into the second column on the Pacific Challenge, was coming back to crack the 1000km.  It did mean a couple of 9km days, but that would be a warm up for someone who has done the Rottnest swim both ways!!

As ever the warmth of hugs from friends and abundant sunny smiles proved perfect distractions from the overcast sky and the blustery on-shore wind.

The enormous weekend crowd winds its way down to the beach.

Minding the rocks, we rolled with the waves out to the point.

Amazingly Rainer found the blog camera!

Even more amazing, some swimmers even waited for the ‘Let’s go’, before heading over to Shelly.

The bumpy swell is quite exhilarating don’t you think? In conditions as today you really know you are wild swimming – a term applied open water swimming in the early 1900’s.

Hanging out at Shelly, I spot Matt looking chuffed.

Reaching 1000km really is such a commitment to not only the maintenance of a joyful, regular habit, but the continuing viability of the coffee shops of Manly.

Visibility was well below par – so no fishy photos from today.  However, I found this one of a gorgeous Blue Groper on my camera from a few weeks ago.

The ritual embarrassment followed post swim. This group has such a great way of celebrating milestones.

Then of course, there is the treat of Elizabeth’s cakes.

Have a wonderful Saturday.

Mary

Next weekend is your first chance to collect a Summer 6km Swim Badge

Saturday 5 December kicks off the 6 km summer swims.  These are on every Saturday during summer.

There is one 10 km swim in December, February and March 2015/16. The proposed date of the first 10 km swim is Saturday 12 December.

2016 Calendars are HERE!!

The 2016 B&B calendars are now on sale. Get your copy from Ian any day at the swim, or order online HERE. They make a great Christmas gift for family and friends, here or overseas. This year the calendars are even more impressive in a larger A3 format, all for the same cost as last year – just $15 each.

RED FEB is coming in February 2016

In anticipation of our participation in the RED FEB Relay next year, Heart Research Australia will provide some invaluable monthly information on general heart health. November’s offering:

Did you know that three times more men die from heart disease than prostate cancer? Heart disease is one of the leading health risks facing men today. Every day, 98 Australian men have a heart attack; 1 in 7 of these men will die. According to a recent Australian Health Survey, three times more men die from heart disease than prostate cancer – yet most men don’t know they have heart disease until they have a heart attack.

90 per cent of Australians have one modifiable risk factor for heart disease. The good news is that there are measures you can take to protect yourself from this largely preventable disease.  The risk factors you can control include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insufficient physical activity, obesity, diabetes, poor nutrition, and excessive intake of alcohol. Other risk factors that are beyond our control include age, gender, family history and ethnicity. You are never too young or too old to start taking care of your heart!

B&B Fundraising Christmas Party

The B&B Christmas Party is on Tuesday 8th December at 6.30 pm in the Moonshine Bar (2nd Floor) at the Steyne Hotel. All swimmers and partners/friends are welcome (no under 18s unfortunately). The theme again this year is simply Christmas. So, come dressed in your finest Christmas paraphernalia. No need to be shy as we will have the whole bar to ourselves. Finger food will be provided by the Steyne, and drinks will be at bar prices. Lots of fun and dancing are guaranteed, with music by our own band “The Troubadors”, who have generously agreed to perform free of charge for us on the night. The cost is $10 per head, with all proceeds going to the running costs of the B&B. But that’s not all. Our charity partner, the Royal Far West Children’s Home, will be running a monster raffle on the night, so please come prepared to support them. Bookings are essential. Book HERE now! Don’t miss out on this fun event, numbers are limited.

Something Special

At the Christmas Party, we will have a fantastic lucky door prize – a Swiss made Australian OceanMoon watch valued at $490 – donated by Bausele Australia. To celebrate the occasion, Bausele will give a 15% discount to all Bold & Beautiful swimmers who purchase a watch on their website. To see their range of watches go to https://www.bausele.com/ehome/, and to activate the discount, just enter the discount code BAB15 when purchasing a watch.  Not only that, Bausele will donate 15% of the value of each and every sale on this code to the Bold and Beautiful. The Oceanmoon watch is ideal for ocean enthusiasts like the B&B swimmers, and features advanced ocean technology including water resistance up to 200m, moon phase, tide display and a 40mm face making it unique in its tracking of the Southern Hemisphere Lunar phase and tidal movements.

Staying safe

Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly! While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits.  Also, if you have a bit more experience, keep an eye out for new swimmers who might need company. Great blog Mary, thanks. Huge kudos to Julie & Matt. The 1000km badge is an irrefutable sign of dedication. Only those who come down multiple times a week over years reach 1000. Massive testament to Jules – she has lived interstate for 3 years but is still so loved by so many of us who love this exhilarating swim she pioneered. What a great pair they made and that Arch to outdo all others must have been at least 4 times the usual length. Brilliant also to see the beloved Jane back today, stay well! Also I am intrigued as to the foreground of the 11th pic. Someone being dunked under by another’s two hands and arms? Can anyone enlighten ?

Thanks Lesbubbles. Lips is a bit of a media tart at the moment. He now has his own calendar, then there is the Rainerdash, plus dusted off his blog tarting skills to be this week’s everywhere man!!

No one is being dunked. It is the passing swimmers fins.

Great blog capturing the fun of the morning beautifully Mary! Jules is so determined knocking off 18 kms in rough conditions in the last 2 days to get to the 1000 km mark. Lovely to see them both again. Jules even said she was intending to comment on the blog today. Hope so! Welcome back Janey x

Thank you for the lovely blog Mary !
It’s always wonderful to come home and get a healthy dose of everyone.
It was extra special to finish this trip with the 1000km badge. It’s only taken me 3 years to do the last 100km 😉
and… it was particularly lovely to be able to share the achievement today with Matt. We sailed on Matt’s boat to scatter my beautiful Dad’s ashes in Cabbage Tree Bay not long before we left for the wild west so I couldn’t think of a fonder way to share my 1000km. Thanks Matt !!
Thank you all for the special fuss and attention and Elizabeth those cakes were seriously above and beyond, but very much appreciated, thank you.
You are all a very special bunch. The inner kindness, positivity and generosity of people in B&B is truly outstanding.
Miss you all so much but love coming home to find nothing has changed, just more and more kind souls to share it with.
Thanks everyone for keeping B&B alive and healthy for everyone every day.
See you over here one day soon… or next time we are back with you for our regular fix.
    Thanks again xx

Thanks everyone for a wonderful week. It was really great seeing everyone and realising just how huge the whole thing has remained. Thanks a lot to all the helpers and particularly I suspect, John and Ian and all the bloggers and odds and sods who selflessly keep the whole thing alive.
Seeing Julie and Matt get their 1000km badge was particularly emotional for me as it brought back fond memories of my own 1000km badge when everyone made such a fuss of me; and Particularly I remember the cakes and all the fanfare…. wait a minute I think I might be confusing it with my first birthday party as an infant!
Anyway it was good to see and it was a lot of fun. Hope we see you all soon back in Manly, and don’t forget you’re always welcome in Perth to swim with our pet sea creatures.
