28/04/2012 – Rip van winkle

Over 164 Bold and Beautiful Swimmers!

The water was beautiful and clear this morning the clearest we (I) have seen it in a long while – glassy turquoise!  Great time to be in the water, which is warm – 21-ish…. in fact better to be in the water than out because it was a bit nippy today!

Although the sea looked calm it was deceiving, with quite a rip taking us out – Heidi James and I did an ‘experiment’ by not swimming once we got in and the rip took us out to the point, mind you all that mucking about meant we missed the LET’S GO! (Here’s Michael’s Safety in rips and surf)

Friendly words of advice – the quicker you get to Shelly – usually because you start the swim off much further away from the (meeting) point, the longer you have a long wait for us slowies / people who start from the point to arrive at Shelly, and the longer you wait the colder you get! 2nd photo Below is a picture of where the point is! 😉

Below trying to capture how clear it is in the water – we could see the bottom all the way there!

I couldn’t get a good shot of some Old Wife fish that we saw so I found some other Old Wives floating along the surface! 😀

There were loads of sharks this morning. If you ever want to see more aquatic life especially the sharks follow Attracta and Jalna! Or just swim along the far left (as you leave Shelly) and just head along that way back towards the point – you won’t be disappointed! 3rd pic isn’t marine life but the magnificant Jalna!

I tried my best to get some clear shots of the wonderful sea life below (I can’t seem to get to our resident aquatic photogapher Gaetan’s level though!). Second pic is of an amazing blue groper that I saw at the point – well he was amazing and massive but he just looks like small dead blue blob in my photo – I bet he did that deliberately! Last photo though the gorgeous green grassy seaweed coming back into the beach (on the far left near the rocks) AND just look who was there! 😉

Late addition to the blog: Message from James Goins

Training up Manly Dam this morning, about 9kms in fresh water, dodging weeds, lily pads and waterskiiers!!
Swimmers: James Goins, Anna Torok, Brendan Maher, Stuart Johnsonand Collie Kinsela.
We were supported on the water by Nicole Piha.
Lovely morning. A good hit out in hard water. Even more prepared for Argyle now!!!

Another lovely morning and great to see and welcome all the new swimmers!

    Lesley, you’ve found Nemo!! Not sure but I think someone made an entire film where they tried to do just that. You’re amazing.
    Our playground is in the Manly Daily today. Check out the article and a great video (almost as good as Gaetan’s): http://manly-daily.whereilive.com.au/news/story/under-shelly/
    And I would like to say a huge thank you to Maureen for sewing such a delightful pie carrier, and thank you to whoever drew my raffle ticket out of the hat! I will be bringing hot pies/cakes to every party I’m invited to from now on. Thanks again Maureen!!!!

    Another wonderful blog which makes us feel so lucky to have come across such an amazing thing to do first thing in the morning!
    Great photos Lesley! (Maybe Nemo will be wearing a pink cap tomorrow!) Love the photo of the old wives making the point about the point. Can’t wait to see all that sea life tomorrow! (Below and above the waterline!)

    Superb swim, can’t believe how warm the water was. So much marine life, especially through ‘shark alley’.
    Fun blog, great photos.
    Hey Anna, the pie carrier comes with a lifetime guarantee, if the stitching fails, I’ll fix it.
    Thanks to my fellow ‘rafflers’, Annette & Nic. A job well done.

    Love the blog and photos Lesley.
    Great you got to capture the amphibious sub species of the Old Wife fish
    HABITAT;
    The waters between Manly and Shelly Beach
    Coffee shops in Manly after 8am
    CHARACTERISTICS;
    Heads turn bright pink when they get wet
    VERY noisy both in and out of the water
    You’ll have to send the photos to Jane and Ozmus to see if they know that there is such a large concentration of these Amazing creatures in our little bay 😉

    Yes, I was very intrigued by the apparently hitherto unknown variety of Old Wifes. I’m back at the OzMus (and CTB) early in May so will ask the experts.

    Only my second B&B swim and I got jimbled! Mind you the jimble strike isnt as itchy as the normal sea lice – I got them on the same day too! It was my lucky day! BUT I’ll be back for more.
