Monotasking is in!!
Multitasking is out. I love corporate jargon. One I like is “Let’s not boil the ocean” and being an ocean swimmer of sorts, I really know the scale of effort required to do that. One used in my work at present which I do not like is “Not my first rodeo” – is it for rodeo clowns?
Anyway, monotasking is great because you really can only do one thing properly at a time. What is the benefit of me trying to solve the big questions while swimming – you know: do harem pants suit anyone at all? where did I buy that really nice chocolate brownie with walnuts? Could I be gluten intolerant ?
Instead I will focus on swimming. What a place to swim. It is great to see the sea each time I come to Manly. And of course these fabulous people
Mark was recounting a scary story but luckily it was only about sharks and not big waves
John is wearing a ski jacket – not good preparation for autumn swimming
I am glad to see Bernhard. He has done the Canberra marathon and now preparing for the Surfers one. I admire him. He shows what you can achieve when you FOCUS
It is my favourite time of year to swim. Look at the light
There are now LOADS of 630am swimmers. It is really nice to see all the pink caps
and other head gear arrangements
Hi Rob. he has a photo in that camera of John Foster swimming today being a day that is not a day on which he brought his swimmers…
Nick called out to me to photo the ‘baby’ wobbie on the rock. It was very hard to spot. I did not get a good photo of it – sorry Nick – but I am glad it was there. I urge all readers to go through the gallery of photos on the BB site as there are some great photos. Who can ever forget the squid series that Nick did a short time ago. Before those photos I had only seen squid on a dinner plate…
What an enjoyable swim. I was focusing on swimming. Instead of thinking – at each stroke – head position, body position, patient forearm, high elbow, open armpit, catch, kick and stroke then again, I just focused on the open armpit. But I was still distracted by the beauty of nature around me. I have been a bit afraid of the sea and things in nature until coming to BB. It is so special.
What I have been reading – Trying to monotask I have been reading about the Australian nurses that went to Vietnam. A great book and very moving. It is astounding what people get through in their lives. Reading and only reading instead of reading on the couch is better. If I read while husband is watching Game of Thrones I don’t get what is going on there and also can only manage lightweight books because otherwise I lose track. Amazing thing to realise.
Enjoy your day
And now to other business:
*B & B Trivia Night*
As you are aware B&B is a free for all activity, but there are ongoing
costs that need to be met. To help support B&B and keep it the wonderful,
inclusive, growing phenomena that it is we will be arranging a fund-raising
Trivia Night at The Steyne Hotel on Tuesday 12th July. Please keep this
date free so you can come along. In order to make this event a success, we
are asking for:
– volunteers to assist in the organisation of the event
– donation of goods and or services that can be used as auction items or
raffle prizes
If you can assist with either of these can you please contact John Kelly
jmk@balancemanagement.net.au).
*Winter Badge*
It’s nearly that time again. Winter is coming … and so are the winter
badges. The winter swimming season runs from 1 June to 31 August, and to
qualify for your winter badge, you must:
– swim at least 20 times during this period
– swim in at least 7 different weeks
– log your swims
To qualify for the WWW badge (winter without wetsuit) you must complete all
of the above without wearing a wetsuit or any other form of bodily thermal
enhancement (don’t forget to check the “without wetsuit” button on the log
in screen). Why not give it a try? Any questions – email Ian (
ugoboyo@gmail.com)

Great monotasking blog, Eliz Original! Love all your portrait pics and dedication.
Beautiful conditions – actually, the whole week has been amazing. What I love is how different the conditions are each day:) xx

Elizabeth as always you’ve tackled the big questions and shot all the grooviest people …but I need to know more about the open armpit. It’s the question I’ll be grappling with tomorrow as I try (or try not??) to activate this feature in my navigation across CTB.

I dont know how much I can tell you about it. You have to work hard and arrive at the open arm pit yourself

Elizabeth I plan to embrace minor asking all day. I just love the concept. And your blog.

Open armpit = swimmers salute Shelly, it’s a sign of mutual respect between swimmers and bloggers (also, cold water when you get in) be flattered if someone armpits you and focus on giving them one back whenever You physically can .

I should have gone straight to you for the secret swimmers’ biz nicky. I’d better be more careful with my winter depilation in that area and all

Shelley no one so far is even within a hair’s breadth of knowing what an open armpit really is

Agree there is only so much multi-tasking that can be done swimming to Shelly – it takes a lot of my focus just getting there – breathing correctly, focusing on technique, staying warm, avoiding being hit by the A team…
I’d like to see Lips in some Harem Pants!

Great Blog and advice, Elizabeth, but Armpit is so vulgar.
Trust the Scots, Irish and Northern English to bring some class to the language. We says “Oxter”
” From the Old English oxta or ohsta.”
Potato Potahto Tomato Tomayto Armpit Oxter,
let’s call the whole thing off.

My daughter used to call them Underpits combining arm pit with under arm.

Blog and blog commentary GOLD. Love it. Thanks E the O. Talk about Chinese whispers how did Mono-tasking get to minor asking ? BTW is it old school and not politically correct of me to say C whispers? what would the PC version be ?.
