25/1/2017 – A Fever of Cownose Rays

25/10/201712

A lot of excitement today about the large group of about 20 stingrays that were swimming in formation out near the hut at Fairy Bower. Some early swimmers told us about them as we were going out. There were quite a few of us who didn’t make it to Shelly this morning but watched this amazing sight… Looked on Aus museum website and think they are Cownose Rays https://australianmuseum.net.au/image/australian-cownose-ray-rhinoptera-neglecta

This swim can bring so many moments of awe and this was one of those mornings…Click on link to see these rays swimming in formation.  https://www.facebook.com/elaine.dejager/videos/10208687542339909/

Leisa showing everyone where the Rays were in true Tongan ‘spot the whale’ style!

Roz was very excited and shows her photos to Fiona and Derek as a group of us looked at them in this spot near the hut!

Old Wives

Sailor Sid with the Diamondfish!

This Blind Shark lives over the rocks towards the point and was out and about yesterday.

Crimson Banded Wrasse

Crimson Morwong

It was worth getting up early to see the sunrise today. This was the sky over Freshwater beach and then it disappeared behind clouds.

The Drinks Express

Little Sarah full of exhuberance as usual!

Steve brings his Scottish friend Dave for a swim. I met Dave in 1984 when I worked in the same ski resort with his friend, 33 years ago!

Derek brings his next door neighbour Frank down. Here with Peter, Michael, Billy and Martin.

The Wows and John heading out

Gayle, Merrilee and Sparkles coming in!

Guy, Brian, Bernhard, Sam and Danny. Two are ‘single and ready to mingle’ and you can catch them at Donny’s Bar at Friday nights ‘Happy Hour’!

Now what is Belinda doing here? Demonstrating how ‘Honey’ her pet goat likes to jump on the table of course! We love hearing about Honey’s antics and hope Belinda brings her down to the swim again soon.

As we are decluttering I’ve been bringing down clothes I don’t want anymore before they go to the clothing bin. It’s great seeing them go to good homes. Sophie and Kelly were pleased with their ‘finds’ and Lisa got something for her daughter Georgia!

Here are Kelly and Sophie again, and Ian very happy in the middle!

Stats

190 swimmers

8 newbies

Water Temp 19.4 degrees (didn’t seem that warm to me!)

Budgy Smuggler News:

Great News for B&B swimmers. The new flagship Budgy Smuggler store is now open at 1A, 22 Darley Road Manly.

Our exclusive Bold and Beautiful Smugglers are currently on sale down there and, to celebrate the opening of the store, Budgy Smuggler are making a special offer – Show your pink cap for 10% off – for all B&B swimmers (in store offer only).

Budgy Smuggler will also be doing a couple of Saturdays in November and December where they will open the shop up from 7am, so B&B swimmers can come down straight after they get out of the water. Watch this space for dates and more details.

Have a great day folks!

Ian, if the reward for fulfilling management duties is to be cuddled by Kelly and Sophie, I’d like to be promoted to management as well.
Otherwise lovely blog Lainey (didn’t expect anything else from you)

I didn’t see the rays but I did see Sparkles seeing them, and she looked pretty excited. I looked but maybe I have a cataract coming on. Great pics as usual, thanks LL

Funny, I realized that I enjoy watching people watching whales more than watching whales themselves.
Great blog Lainey. I saw the rays thanks to Mary who called me back when i was already near the point. Glad she did. It was spectacular. Never seen anything like it.

Thanks for your comments guys. Just had Julie from The Manly Daily call me to ask for photos of the Rays so we might be in the MD! Still not sure if they are Eagle Rays or Cownose. Has anyone any ideas?

Think they are ‘Golden Cownose Rays’ but apparently are dangerous and a similar species killed Steve Urwin. Lucky they were a bit deep for us to get too close Roz!

Only dangerous if you grab hold of one like Steve did!
What an amazing sight though wow !!
    Hope they back tomorrow!
