25/10/13 – Smooth Sailing

25/10/201312

After a couple of weeks of NE swells, murky water and choppy conditions, we have a week forecast for flat conditions and southerly waves, which means clear water and smooth sailing people!

Another typical sunrise this morning – great conditions for Booty Camp I hear you say? – or a Bolderdash? The sunrises right on 6:01am today!

If you look closely, you can see the 6:30 express coming out of the Shelley station…

…and here they are emerging back at the terminus…

There was Something About Mary this morning  – She’s back!

…and the word was out….

JA was all business.

Sky was looking for “slow swimmers”

Anniewannie tried to look cool when she copped this little special which sounded like a Wallabies front row packing down…

…are you OK Anniewannie?? Almost a Janet Jackson moment there….

Puffy was here….

I found Elaine’s toady garden… and in her honour – they shall all be named…. Elaine!

Here’s Elaine, and Elaine, and Elaine, and Elaine, and Elaine…..

Here’s a Wrasse – we see them every day – this one was close enough to  get a decent pic of – see his face?

The wrasses are a familyLabridae, of marine fish, many of which are brightly colored. The family is large and diverse, with over 600 species in 82 genera, which are divided into nine subgroups or tribes. They are typically small fish, most of them less than 20 centimetres (7.9 in) long, although the largest, the Humphead wrasse, can measure up to 2.5 metres (8.2 ft). They are efficient carnivores, feeding on a wide range of small invertebrates. Many smaller wrasses follow the feeding trails of larger fish, picking up invertebrates disturbed by their passing. Juveniles of some representatives of the genera BodianusCirrhilabrus, andOxycheilinus hide among the tentacles of the free-living mushroom coral Heliofungia actiniformis.

The word “wrasse” comes via Cornish from the Welsh word gwrach meaning an old woman or hag.

So many flathed – so little time…. heres one of the big ones…

Attracta noticed this bird, which she quickly named as a “shag”

She reckons this might be her first shag in the shallows – Yeh, right!

I would say there is a “plethora” of Wobbegongs at the moment

(there’s at least 5 of them around  right now)

Stats:

Swimmers: 190

nOObs: 6

Water: 18.8c

Have a great weekend! – Nick D

Incredible pics, Nick! Just a tad biased when I say I love the “all business JA” and the last, very big wobbegong which I was so glad to see at the end of a magical bolder-shelly!
Special thanks to Chris xxxxx and also to Andrew M for the scenic home-leg from Shelly!
Now taking bookings for bolderdashes and bolder-shelleys and 6Ks end Nov and Dec!!!

If it hasn’t been handed in to Iain F by now, you may be out of luck this time.
If anyone remembers they’ve left anything in the changing room, best to get back during the day and look in the RUBBISH BIN (I found my cozzie in it once, in the afternoon) or put a message here to ask for anyone to have a look if you’re not near. Sooner the better….
Also, always ask Iain, as anything clearly belonging to a B&Ber gets handed to him usually.
If you leave anything outside, always worth checking with the surf club too. This morning Mark from the club put out several items that had been left behind, including a wetsuit, for inspection!

    Great blog mate.
Funny and factual. Not always an easy combo to pull off. I’m loving the ‘fish facts’.
The 6:30 swim was legendary. We had a clear run-way the whole way in.

Yes, I love the fish facts too. The Wrasse is a Maori Wrasse (Ophthalmolepis lineolata). Almost certainly a male because of the beautiful scribbly blue lines on his head. The scientific name means eye scale (not sure why) with lines on its sides. And fascinating to find out what “Wrasse” means!
