25/08/13 did you see it?

25/08/201318

204 swimmers gave up their Sunday lie-in for a dip in the ocean and why wouldn’t they? It’s gorgeous today.

We also were lucky enough to spot one of our favourites! I was very excited to find ‘him’. I’m off for a cycle, so Nick added more pics later.

With a short timeframe this morning, we’ll let the photos do the talking. A fine day for a fine swim.

Here’s Sundays shag on a rock.

“Zip me up Nick, it’s 7am let’s go swimming!”

Morning Kim, best take your Uggs off before you try swimming!

Err, not sure what James is squinting at here? Morning James!

7am ……heading off.

Nick noticed the moon above, and was feeling in a lovely amorous mood.

“Thankfully that Nick chap hasn’t seen us, we can just get on with our swim”

Wrong way Lesley!!

Nice to see the return of Manly’s most famous Lips!

And now to the story of the day! I never actually made it to Shelly beach and was totally gutted not to have my camera, but luckily the paparazzi turned up on their way back. LOOK! A turtle!

We think our friend ‘Yertle’ is a green turtle after reviewing this chart….let us know if you think it’s a different variety.

Some of were concerned for its health, but Mr Turtle showed us his colours.

And off he went!

Lutz practising his free diving

And a word from Dr Seuss on our friend
‘And the turtles of course, ….all the turtles are free
As turtles and, maybe, all creatures should be.’

Some of our other friends didn’t get left out ….

Here’s Nick’s pics for the day…

Did you know? When born, green sea turtles are only 5 cm (2 in) long. But they grow up to 1.5
meters (5 ft) in length and can weigh over 300 kg (700 lbs), making them the
largest of the hardshell sea turtles.

They have heads that cannot retract into their bodies, a trait commonly
associated with turtles. Reaching speeds of up to 56 km/h (35 mph), their
streamlined shell and paddle-like flippers aid in their ability to swim quickly
and with grace.

Green sea turtles are able to hold their breath for hours at a time. Because
they are cold-blooded, the temperature of the water affects their ability to
hold their breath. In colder water they can hold their breath for longer.

To reach their nesting grounds, green turtles migrate long distances, traveling
back to the beaches where they were born. I was lucky enough to live for a year out on the great barrier reef where these magnificent creatures came to nest, simply amazing!

A late video update of our turtle experience….from Stephen

Signing off Snorkles, with photos from Stephen and Nick. The Sunday blog team.

Yertle thanks for hanging out with me today, apologies for the 203 of my friends that turned up too and woke you up. Perhaps choose a spot on the right hand side away from the snorkellers next time?
