22/05/2013 – Absolutely bl**dy awful!! :-D

22/05/201321

HAHA …NOT …this is about the 8th week in a row, surely?? that we’ve had this great weather, warm seas and it was possibly the clearest yet??

Although…

Judging by this pic it seems to be gloomy (and not many BnB’ers) but it’s ALL an

illusion…because YES  it’s still glorious…

No trick camera work for me – this is the real thing! 😀

John S.

I spotted the turtle swimming along the bottom this time – well away from bloggers camera’s and I didn’t tell anyone!

Marije

Bloggers Nick and Stephen fighting it out for the photo of the week!

Yellow tails taking off!

Jane taking off!

Yep bloody awful! 🙂

Just in from Dr John Jackson: As some of you may be aware, Rob Byrne has initiated an effort for some of the softies, sorry wet-suities, to swim a winter WITHOUT a wetsuit for charity… Unfortunately it looks like Rob is already really struggling and it’s not even June – based on the latest scientific calculations, by the end of July he’s likely to look a lot like my (Dr John’s) Dad! 😀

ps. see Rob if you wanna join him and raise money for his chosen charity Bear Cottage

Gobsmakingly amazing jelly photos, Stephen. From these photos it is clear that it is the White-Spotted jelly, Phyllorhiza punctata. My book doesn’t say it stings, but I wouldn’t risk touching those trailing bunches of grapes!
What size would you say, Stephen? I’d like to send the pics to the OzMus.

Here is a link to Mauricio’s latest success – video of Blue Trevally which Mark has put on the Oz Mus website.
    http://www.australianmuseum.net.au/Araara-Pseudocaranx-georgianus/
There has been a name change and these are the fish we have been calling the Silver Trevally. None of my 3 textbooks now gives the correct scientific or common name! Confusion reigns.

    Oh you’re evil!!!
I stood there all dressed up and nowhere to go. And again, for a 3rd day in a row, you stood me up!!!
Lucky for me Marije was there at 6:59am so I didnt have to go all by myself. Again.
Glad you eventually emerged at Shelly. Nice gesture to show up for the return swim at least.
Lesbutt – great photos. Love the new sign off pic!

If anyone wants to make a promise to swim the whole of Winter without a wetsuit, you can record it here http://www.PromiseLocker.com and everyone can track your progress on Facebook. Apparently Dolphin Whisper and John S think they are man enough to do it!

I’m in possession of CCTV footage from Manly Wine showing me walking down the ramp at precisely 6:59am.
    Bring on the court case!

Fantastic pihotos Stephen, great blog, I agree with every word, maybe the best vis so far. I was late today, by 10:00 was in the water and couldnt believe it, saw 12 duskies and the turtle together, this swim will be hard to forget! Hope conditions remain the same for the rest of winter!

I can confirm that Lips swam – or at least walked – because I saw him sobbing with relief and joy when Baby Jane turned up at Shelly.

I thought Stephen’s amazing jellyfish was a White-Spotted jelly, and sent the pics to Stephen K. at the OzMus to confirm. This is what he says:
    “Hi Jane,
I don’t think that is Phyllorhiza. I think it is Versuriga anadyomene a species generally only known from the tropics (some info attached). We only have one specimen in the collection, from Rockhampton. I would love to get a few more and if you are seeing them around Sydney it is very unusual and needs to be documented. Jane can you let me know where they could be collected please.
    Thanks. Steve.”
Isn’t that fascinating? I think the OzMus can collect from a Marine Reserve for scientific purposes, so I’ll keep you posted.

I also sent Stephen K. Lesley’s beautiful jelly pic from a few days ago; he says:
    “Hi Jane,
That one is a species of Thysanostoma. There are 3 recognised species, I am not sure which it is. They seem to be rare this far south but we do have one record in the database from off Coogee. They are very beautiful.
    Cheers, Steve.”

Ha, ha – glad to read the day-by-day account of your swims!
Lesbutt, love the pic and caption of the turtle, but of course totally out-blog tarted by Stephen’s amazing jellyfish shots.
Lainey, if he can add them onto the next day’s Blog, you can add your lovely Boldercrawl pics onto your Blog tomorrow. I think it was a conspiracy by the guys to eliminate the pic-of-the-week competition!!
