21/03/16 – Long Slow Sigh

March 21, 20165

Dark, grey and 15deg air temp, not very inspiring.
But waiting at The Point in 23.4deg water, with raindrops teasing the surface into a bluegreen velvet and a solar disc sunrise peaking down beneath the cloud canopy, the morning began to feel more like a long slow sigh…

Hey, you know that new-age saying, ‘Breathe in love and breathe out stress’?  Well, neuroscience agrees there’s actually something to it.  But it’s all in the timing.

Long, slow exhalations driven from the diaphragm are shown to move your physiology back towards a healthy balance. Reducing indicators of physically retained stress and also allowing better access to areas of the brain involved in altruism and compassion.  They’ve even found an optimal breath rate for achieving this heightened state of well being, it’s about 9 to 11 seconds per breath.

Same time it takes to enjoy a long slow sigh.

    Agree Andrew. What a swim!
Rising sun glowing behind dark clouds. Bath-like water temp below and icy rain on our backs.
