20/07/2012 – Whale and Calf Relaxing at Manly

20/07/20128

84 Bold & Beautiful swimmers.

Enjoyed bath like water temperatures this morning !!!  Just perfect for a bit of whale watching…  and definitely warmer in than out with that icy wind blustering.

As Lee walked along the walkway to Shelly and back to warm up before the swim this morning she was rewarded with a sighting of a huge whale just chilling in the bay !!

So she got back to Manly and told the pre-dawn swimmers, who set off at record speed in the hope of swimming with this beautiful creature.

Finally… it’s 7am and we’re all even more excited than usual to start our swim.

As we gathered off the point the whale and it’s calf were resting just off the Bower

So we enjoyed a lovely adventure swim out that way for a change

Enjoying the stunning underwater scenery of the beautiful rolling boulders in lovely clear warm water with gorgeous big schools of fish and a mermaid 🙂

We were fortunate enough to see blue gropers and port jacksons but unfortunately no whale this time…  Next time for sure !!

If anyone’s up for a longer swim tomorrow Ben and Collie are planning a 4 hour swim !!  In preparation for their Hammer the Hutt and Flog the Dog marathon swim the following Sat, 28th July…  when Ben and Collie plan to swim for around 12 hours (~6am-6pm) with mostly in water feeds as part of their Solo English Channel training.  Ben and Collie would love the company of any / all B&B swimmers who would care to join them for one or multiple laps throughout their epic day.  Cuddles, lollies and hot chocolates will be gratefully received too from what I understand 😉

We have enough people booked in for our next monthly special B&B dinner at Bluewater on Monday 30th July to have the whole restaurant to ourselves 🙂  There are still spaces for more of you though if you’d like to come !!  It was a fantastic night last month with superb food so don’t miss out… book in now by clicking here

Dinner is $20 each including shared entrees, a selection of mains to choose (incl vegetarian option), corkage (for byo wine only) plus a little thank you from each of us to the staff !  All beers (including 4 pines) and desserts only $5.

Water Temperature 17.8
Air Temperature 8.0
Sunrise 6.56am
Sunset 5.08pm
High Tide: 8.58am
Low Tide: 2.37pm

Its going to be nice again tomorrow, with a low swell and sunshine again. The water temp at nearly 18c today may go even higher as there is very warm water off the coast in the East Australian current!!
Those two whales today ate all the Jimbles!! What a shame.

I saw the whales breeching as I was swimming back in. I turned round to assess the wave situation (as I hate waves) and saw the water spouting up into the air. It was a very exciting swim this morning!

yeah but Michael what about the wind direction!? That westerly brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!
It was really lovely swimming out to the Bower! and my stinger suit worked – except on my wrists which weren’t covered! :-/
The jimbles will be gone soon – they don’t hang around forever!

Annette & I met @ 6.20am for an early swim, what a lovely surprise to see the whale AT THE POINT. Wow, probably 25m off the rocks, so so close. Waited for the whale to head out of the bay before we entered the water @ halfway. A beautiful swim, and all before 7am.

Saw them out there – barely! And all the pink caps swimming towards them! 🙂

The whale and calf came right into the bay today at about midday and then a big pod of dolphins at about 4pm!!
Its becoming a marine zoo out there.

Saw you and Michael swimming back towards half-way beach as I was paddling out towards the Bower. Could see the whale but was fair way out. Missed a close encounter, according to some paddlers.
