19/12/2012 – Feelin’ the Blue-y’s!

19/12/201229

Hi Everyone – I only have half an hour to do the blog today! So it won’t be my usual awesome blog haha…. 😀
Another glorious day!!

Some bolderdashers returning…

Alex got some serious injuries at Hell Fire last night – cough …I mean some blueys got him on the bolderdash! Just about everyone was hit by them!!

This was also supposed to be a photo of a blue bottle sting however you can’t really see it SO I thought I would put it up anyway… for the lads! heehee – Guess the butt??

We were all a bit nervous to go to Shelly after hearing all the Man O War (bluey) stories BUT guess what? I didn’t see a single blue bottle on the swim to Shelly !

Some rays fromm ABOVE beaming down protection on us at Shelly!!

AND that’s all I have for photos today!!! My underwater photos are blurry…
Check out an awesome video of this morning’s swim, courtesy of Mauricio here

Bye for now Lesley 😀

Facts and figures for today:

20 Bolderdashers

160 Bold & Beautiful swimmers

10 swimmers continued on for a double

 BnB Extra News:

Sabine Homrighausen won her age group at the weekend’s Manly Ocean 2km swim!  She finished in 29:15 a full 3 minutes ahead of the next girl despite stopping several times to reattach her timing chip!  She was also 16th overall female.  She’s such a fish these days!

Also of note is David Washbrook came 18th overall and 5th in his age group in the Canberra Half Iron Man on Sunday.  Hopefully leading him into the Australian Team !! 🙂
John Hiron also came 3rd in his age group, not bad for someone who was worried they wouldn’t make the swim cut off time !
Well done to all our B&Bers who took part!

Like a war-zone out there for sure! I couldn’t see through my goggles (forget the wool fat/vaseline – it got into the goggs), so when Paige and the other B’dashers started screaming, it took me a while to work it out. After a sting on the face, I got the message. We all valiantly swam on (Michael’s instructions and assurances we’d be fine!), when Jon got a particularly vicious one wrapped round his ankle and up inside his wetsuit leg. We were forced to abandon ship through the N Steyne surf, as were Alex & Ms Super Butt, while the Super Valiant bolded on.
Beautiful calm, easy swim to Shelly by contrast, so I ended up doing a FULL double. Lovely and relaxed until on the last leg back with Jen & Alyson – Jen got blue-bottled and Alison got very severe cramps!
See you for tomorrow’s Manly Daily Drama – Lips, Simon C and Slowie Mark at 5.35!

Wow.. bluebottles, cramps, emergency escapes via North Steyne. You are really selling tomorrow’s b’dash to me LSA!! 🙂
Hope Jon and all the other victims are feeling better by now.
I might resist your pushy recruitment efforts this one time and do normal Shelly swim tomorrow. Gotta save my energy to be ready to battle the sharks at night swim tomorrow!

I hope everyone has recovered from the Bluey stings.
Sarah, does that mean you didn’t do the full 3k required for the bolder dash tick under regulation 4C?
Also , last Sunday doing patrol for the surf club, whilst “giving back to the community”,
Mr Storch and I were picking up bluebottles by the bottle and burying them, it was funny watching the tourists faces who thought we were Steve Irwin reincarnated. Haha
We also had to assure many people,”it’s ok, you won’t die”
Storchy also found out that using a whistle after such an event resulted in a Nicky Manaj type lips effect. Ladies take note. Cheap and readily available. Haha
    Lips, you have competition. Haha

Congrats Sabine to winning your age group at Manly Ocean Swim last weekend! What a great result!!
What an honor to swim with you.. I mean, have you dashing past me in the mornings! 🙂

Yes, Sabine, a great honour to be able to say we swim in your company, even if it’s just a flash we see:-)

Does sound like you might need that energy and more tomorrow night with all that bait out there…. spare some of the energy for Sat too:-))

    19/12/2012 at 12:18 pm

Ha, ha, I told Michael (who writes the rules) that you were bound to be a pain over that 4C regulation and he assured me that the fine print says that if you swim through a wall of Bluies, get stung a few times, make an exit through the surf and surfers and then do a DOUBLE assisting with emergency rescues at all stages, you get 10K bonus points:-))

    19/12/2012 at 12:23 pm

Hope your son, Christian (?), enjoyed his first swim and wasn’t put off by all the Bluey stories. Was hoping to chat to him more at b’fast – next time!

not sure whose butt that is but Lesley has some competition! (not really Lesley, no butt compares to yours)!
I wonder if Blue bottles are more prevalent at night time?
Lesley for a half hour blog, highly restrained and jovial! Grammar and diction superb!
Humour extraordinarily dry and witty. Love It!

It’s actually an honour to swim with all of you! Little Sarah you are amazing, all the kms you are clocking up lately and thoroughly deserve bonus points!
Best Butt Lesley, you are pretty awesome yourself putting together such a great blog in only half an hour! I’ve nearly finished my cartoons…
Hope people aren’t too put off by the bluebottles, and your stings aren’t too bad. Looking forward to the Sunset/Night Swim tomorrow!

After a late night I was very disappointed to miss this morning’s swim – that was until I read your post Sarah!!
    Really dislike nasty stinging things.
Hopefully the wind will shift overnight and blow the nasty things away. . .

Haha keep feeding him LSSA and you will keep benefiting from these obscure modifications to regulation. Haha

    19/12/2012 at 1:38 pm

    BULLY ALERT.
What’s all this about ‘following Michael’s instructions that we would all be ok’?
I wanted to go back. I was however bullied by my companion [P…e] who threatened to ‘rip my bloody arms off’ if I even thought about it!
So, under protest and suffering emotional shock, I had to swim the whole way there and back.
I’m now sitting here thinking about Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Its a horror story when you thought you were swimming with Polyanna and find out you’re actually swimming with Mrs Hyde!!

    19/12/2012 at 1:39 pm

Yup, He did enjoy himself. Coming along again tomorrow.
Surfing while I’m bolder dashing. Yip yip. Haha
    Thank you for asking.

And yes Lesley has some competition (not that I have checked out Lesley’s butt either .
I saw a photo on the blog one day.
    Ill stop talking now.

Mauricio, LUUUURVE your video. Especially the SLO MO swimming and the above / below the water angle. Is that a mullet I see lurking in the depths?

  • Inez

    19/12/2012 at 1:54 pm

I remember not so long ago when I asked you what the best strategy was for avoiding jimbles, and you replied “just ignore them”. Perhaps you could have taken your own advice this morning.

  • mauricio

    19/12/2012 at 2:17 pm

Not sure if its a mullet, the eagle ray though was a plus today!
Will try to get a little closer to the duskies next time, ehhh perhaps
will just wait for the water to be clearer!
    Thanks re the video

Yes Michael, I really need to get you up to scratch to keep swimming with me. First of all, you’ll need to speed up as I’m so super quick. Then you really need to get over your dislike of jellyfish stings (especially to the face) – What’s the big deal? If you can work on these things then we can continue swimming together…Just kidding! You are awesome! Thanks for swimming next to me and encouraging me not to wimp out! See you tomorrow…

Ron Adley o fOCean Care Solutions – a company that researches and provides treatment for various marine stings advises: Heat is best first treatment – at least 45C preferably for 20 minutes then apply his jellyfish sting solution. His company has some special kits including heat strips for treating Portuguese Man ‘O War/Blue Bottles. He’s going to send a sample or two and we’ll also looking at importing some stock for sale of the basic sting spray hopefully for around $5/bottle.
