18/12/2013 – Each swim is unique!

18/12/201320

It all seemed like a normal start to the day with Bold and Beautiful….

Storchy’s Bootcamp…Arabella showing her butt…

A missing flipper….(did anyone find the other one to this??)

A big summer crowd…..

The walk down to the sea…

A family portrait… the Chapman’s…

Giving a fellow swimmer a helping hand..

 Swimming out to the point…

The Let’s go…

Heading off to Shelly…singing songs in my head ……

when

IT

happened!!

I saw a BIG shark!!!

This is what I thought I saw…..

This is more likely what I saw …

BUT this is probably what I actually saw  :-/

I swam as fast as I could to Shelly thinking I was being chased!  But of course I wasn’t…

As was confirmed by other swimmers it  was one of our Lovely dusky whalers.  It is no doubt here looking for somewhere to have it’s babies! I can’t believe I panicked!!! I have seen them on the swim for years and I am actually very pleased to see them back!

Below everyone waiting at Shelly oblivious to my panic 😉

Leaving Shelly I saw this fella who gave me no heartattacks at all….

And these guys all were pleased to see me 🙂

And a blurry pic of the Ray near the point…

I did see a lot of plastic today – A LOT!! I collected what I could BUT next time you see some please grab it and stuff it in your swimmers!

With the aim of becoming carbon neutral the B&B Login App reduces our paper consumption.  Log your swim between 5am and 9am for the easy way to ensure your swim is recorded in the daily attendance and on the Pacific Challenge.

New way to log in        Old way to log in.

To get started, send an email to Ian Forster (ugoboyo@gmail.com).  He will check that your email address is activated on the attendance register then send you info on how to get started.  Happy clicking.

Summer badge swims are go!!

Every Saturday during summer there will be a 6km swim – usual route is to Freshwater and back, then once a month a 10km swim.  Route depends on conditions that day so it is a good idea to arrive a little early to have a briefing from Squadron Leader John ‘007’ Bond. The next 10km swim to be held on 11 January depending on conditions.

I would be interested to know Bubbles where you saw the dusky. As I swam into the northern end of Shelly I thought something grey flashed past me. I stopped and turned to see if it was a dolphin but nothing showed so I just went back to thinking I was either hallucinating or I had been scared by my left arm…… Ignorance is bliss. Robert G

I’m sure quite a few of us would have panicked to come across a big shark, especially whilst swimming alone….. love the 3 pics… nailed it, Lesbutt!
Is the fin one of the pair you tossed overboard on our 10K, Nick? Maybe the other will turn up too:)
Quite a few grumbles from Lips about the chop en route to Queensie, but after spending a few hours in the Curl Curl heavy-duty chop, seemed like a gloriously calm sea to me:-) It’s all relative…. likewise with the rubbish people were muttering about – just visit me in Hong Kong for a swim in the surf when the Noreasterly is having a good day:-))

I didn’t grumble! In fact, it turned out one of the easiest Bolderdashes of all times. Could have done another one if it wasn’t for my day job.
Yes, Lesbubbles, the Mullets are back.

Apparently left arms are responsible for 84% of shark alarms in Australia. Fact.

Very funny! I’m glad it wasn’t just me who arrived back at Manly with a deformed looking butt, I must have collect 10+ plastic bags!

OK…more of a grumble in anticipation, perhaps:) Actually, a beautiful swim – esp back to Shelly.

As you and Sarah walked across the road to the coffee shop I was watching the big black sh..k contractors boat in the distance behing you lifting the net – must have been a sign
And Ian from Balmoral told me he saw a sh..k this morning – twice. My goggles fog up so it’s no issue
I found a beautiful specimen of shiny metal/ plastic foil today – a fish mirror – now in the bin at Shelley
With no 52 piece orchestras out there on pontoons – all good

    Also
I was slow on the uptake with the login App but it is so good everyone should get someone to show them if the email instructions are a bit challenging – best is it takes the heat off Ian F and others – the manual way is time sapping

I reckon the ‘shark’ sighting was more likely a giant plastic bag! Lesbutt: you should have grabbed it and stuffed it down your cossie!

what made it scary was it was up nearer the surface and just behind me! And so out of the blue – i haven’t seen any sharks for AGES. Tt was about 7ft!!
It was RIGHT in the middle at the deepest point of the swim…
    :-O

Hi Lesley! Really enjoyed ur entertaining blog. I have not had a swim yet in the Great Aust Bight as I think it is The White Pointers’ Dining Room.

That IS scary – because yesterday I snorkled all along the Bower Break by myself after the swim, and then swam back to the point right across the Bay. Note to self: Remember there’s safety in numbers.
