18/11/2014 – Moody Tuesday

18/11/201426

This surprisingly glorious Tuesday morning saw at least 116 B&B swimmers roll up at B&B Central.  Mind you, there are multiple swims available at this time of year – Boulderdash, Drinks Express, 7am regulars – we are not all gathered in the one spot at the same time!

Some like to keep sleeping right up until the 7am call.

With the arrival of the B&B Calendar, the blog tarts are out in force to see if their efforts over the past 12 months have paid off.

Rainer is particularly disappointed at not having his own month.   Especially as his efforts have been nothing short of remarkable this last year.

Lesley is more interested in the appearance of a new sign!  Has anyone heard the Sun Sound?

Against the steely grey sky, the pink caps were like neon beacons.

Jill seems to find the water chilly, but really, at 20.4 it is not that bad.

A little frivolity at the point with the Drs.  Patrick and Cathie are such a joyful duo.

The water is gradually clearing.  It has turned a light shade of blue-green that is a bit nicer than the slimy mossy green it has been over the past few weeks.

Once you arrive at Shelly, you do appreciate the full significance of the size of this group of gathered swimmers.

Lucy seemed shy to photographed today until she found a buddy.

Ted was delighted to find this catfish ball just off the Bower end of Shelly.

It is interesting to see the juvenile fish returning to the aquarium (the bit between the point and half-way).

And a massive Blue Groper!

Have a wonderful Tuesday

The B & B Christmas Party is on Tuesday 9th December at 6.30 pm in the Moonshine Bar (2nd Floor) at the Steyne Hotel. All swimmers and partners/friends are welcome. The theme this year is simply “Christmas“. So come dressed in your finest Christmas paraphernalia. There is no need to be shy, as we will have the whole bar to ourselves. The Steyne will provide finger food and pizza, with drinks at bar prices. Lots of fun and dancing guaranteed, with music by our own band “The Troubadors“, who have generously agreed to perform free of charge for us on the night. The cost is $10 per head, with all proceeds going to the running costs of the B&B. Our charity partner, the Royal Far West Children’s Home, will also be running a monster raffle on the night, so please come prepared to support them. Bookings are essential. Book HERE now! Don’t miss this fun event, numbers are limited.

Lovely photos today Mary. When the male Blue Gropers acquire that lighter-coloured saddle they are getting seriously big and mature.

I had a beautiful view of the size of the group all lined up along Shelly as Shaun and I raced in to try and beat the ‘Shelly cut-off’ after a slightly more challenging Belly swim….
What a really lovely group to come ‘home’ to and great Moody Blue pics, Mary!

I agree, great photos especially the Catfish. Jane why do they ball like that? And I saw lots of the juveniles too. Great swim despite the moody weather

Elizabeth, it has something to do with their moustache and the attractiveness once grown.
I’ll let Jane fill in the detail.

Go on, Snorks, buy a few crates of calendars to send to all your friends and keep the B&B in business! There should be a sliding scale for buying up supplies depending on how much coverage one has:)

anyone know when the first 6K swim will be? I go overseas Dec 10th and would love to do it beforehand, as I don’t really think my fitness levels will be the same when I return mid January.

I would like to do 6 km and I am sure I can but don’t want to swim alone. I am hoping some swimmer(s) who want to do a scenic swim with stops for morning tea etc while I try hard to keep up might want to swim just ahead of me. Fingers crossed.

I’l be glad just to get back there soon and do any swim. Been busy having more bushfires up here in the Blue Mtns. Now that I know who DWSS is (I think it was you who offered to swim with me a few weeks ago?)I can perhaps call on your good nature again for same reason? Losing confidence quickly….looking forward! BTW enjoying all your beautiful B & B photos from afar…..

The generally received opinion is that they do it for protection. I’m not totally convinced:
    1. Why then do other species not do it?
    2. Striped Catfish (and the yellow or green Estuary Cobbler, formerly Catfish) have venomous spines in front of their dorsal and pectoral fins (SO DON’T TOUCH THEM!) so don’t seem to be in such need of protection as a lot of other species.
