18/04/14 – Happiness is…a B&B swim

June 18, 201418

If you want to be happy,  you … wake up early, see the sunrise, exercise, get close to nature, laugh… and engage in activities where you connect with others, according to all the research… Our swim ticks all these boxes. No wonder we are a happy, positive bunch!

How are Ted and I going to manage without this amazing daily drama for 6 weeks when we head off to Europe tomorrow? We’ve only missed one week of B&B in the last 3 years!

Quite a good turn out for Storchy’s Booty Camp this morning at 6am inspite of it only being 11 degrees. John (another one) took us through a great FIFA World Cup inspired work out!

The sunrise wasn’t quite as spectacular as it has been as there was a band of cloud just above the ocean above Shelly Beach. Still absolutely glorious though!

Trish came out from her early swim saying, “It’s just beautiful out there, just beautiful!” Reports were that it was clear again, calmer and .2 degrees warmer than yesterday at 18.6!

Lovely to see Jules Mackin again. This inspiring lady got me in to swimming with the B&B. Some of you remember her when she was a nervous novice swimmer now she swims 3.8 kms as the easy part of an IronMan.

A really low tide meant we could almost walk to The Point today…

Brad is back swimming with us after laser treatment on his eyes. He can see all the marine life now! Welcome back Brucy!

And it’s off to Shelly, through schools of fish and over graceful Dusky Whalers!

More happy swimmers! Greg, Derek, John and Ian McKnighty caught out doing a Splash n Dash!

Lesbubbles gives us her best smile!

The Queen of Blog Tarting is back! LSA, Little Sarah Amazing!

So so lucky to see not one but 2 giant cuttlefish just 200 metres off Shelly!

Stephen gets up close (but these are MY photos!)

As he swims towards rocks his texture changes!

I show Simon and Stephen, Diamond Fish Gorge near the tall palm tree.

 And a ball of catfish.

What a fantastic swim it was today! Winter swimming at it’s absolute best and absolutely OK without a wetsuit if you warm up with a bit of a run (or soccer!) beforehand!

Lesbubbles is coming back to blog whilst I’m away! She is also featured in the article below in one of her more flattering photos along with the rare leaf-impersonating batfish!

Beware!!!  Don’t stand too close to the swimmer below at Shelly. There is a tendency to be thankful for a warm patch  in Winter but look at the colour of that water around him. Can’t be healthy.

The above mentioned swimmer also brings his own ‘Breakfast Pack’ to the swim at weekends. Lesbubbles shows it below. We like eccentrics but this is ridiculous!

Bottom of the Blog – the very useful stuff

Thanks from the Sherpa fundraiser

“Have counted the tin contents: total of $222  ($222.70 to be exact).  Great amount, and thanks so much.”

Week 4 of the Winter Badge season.

There are 14 weeks in the winter season.  To qualify for the prized Cold & Bold Badge you simply need to swim 20 times within the season ensuring you have swum in aminimum of 7 different weeks.  So, attempting to do it all in the first few weeks does not count!!  Make sure you use the i-Log to register your without wetsuit for the WWW badge.

B&B i-Log

The B&B i-Log is the best way to capture your swims!!  Log your swim ANYTIME of day using this really efficient and easy way to ensure your swim is recorded in the daily attendance and on the Pacific Challenge.. To get started, send an email to Ian Forster ugoboyo@gmail.com (This is not a link so please copy and paste into your email). He will check that your email address is activated on the attendance register then send you info on how to get started.

Staying safe

There may not be any waves just at the moment, but are you prepared for their return? Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly!  While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits.  Do read these excellent tips on staying safe in the surf.  To read, or even download, click here.

If anyone can support the Bear Cottage swimmers next weekend and support them by paddling next to them from Manly to Bondi please comment below!

Thanks Lainey for all your fabulous blogs & pics. Hope you and Ted love your holiday. I went back & looked in the archives and found your blog of 14 May with the ‘fish map’ plus looked at that ‘fish of cabbage tree bay’ youtube clip you recommended. All the amazing marine life is just the icing on the cake of the sweet experience that is being a pink capper. Thanks for all your welcoming friendliness. You will be missed! Travel safe.
