16/07/18 – Darkest Before

16/07/20188

Eos, or Aurora is the goddess of dawn, renewing herself every day.  She gets a mention in Homer for wearing a saffron dress and Shakespeare says she has a bed with shady curtains. It’s that magical part of the day, with an elastic quality, as if our construct of linear time is tangibly arrested; if only for a few moments.

This is reflected in the many moods through which dawn travels on her way from the darkness. All of these dawns happen before the actual ‘sunrise’, which is when the very first rays from the top of the sun disk are actually visible.

The ‘Astronomical dawn’ occurs when the geometric centre of the Sun’s disk is 18 degrees below the horizon (5:29am today). ’Nautical dawn‘ is a little later when the geometric centre of the Sun’s disk is 12 degrees below the horizon (5:59am today). Aptly named ‘Civil dawn’ is later still, when the geometric centre of the Sun’s disk is only 6 degrees below the horizon (6:30am today… Yes, that is much more civil).  With the sunrise itself coming along at 6:57am today.

…And it isn’t really darkest before the dawn. But it is quite often the coldest (4.9 C today).

Winter Badge

The Winter swimming season is finally here!

Although the water temperature may be a little colder than you might like, there are several advantages of swimming in winter, including flat seas, good visibility and no bluebottles.

Perhaps the biggest advantage is that you can also qualify for a winter badge by swimming a minimum of 20 times between 1st June and 31st August.

You must also swim in at least 7 different weeks. If you manage to do all of your qualifying swims without a wetsuit (or other thermal enhancing equipment), you will also qualify for the coveted WWW badge (Winter without wetsuit).

So start now, and don’t forget to log your swims to qualify.

    Hello Lost Property Angels!
Robert forgot his wetsuit in the men’s change rooms today. He is 10 and pretty sad about it! I suspect it is likely that it is in safe hands so if you have picked it up I’ll be swimming tomorrow and Wednesday.
    Fingers crossed. Thank you!
    Cathie 🙂
