14/07/2014 – The Goal

14/07/201411

There was a goal to be scored this morning, in a competition for which our world stopped.
See, there’s a group of swimmers who play on a global field, where the meaning of competition dives deep.

The modern definition of the word ‘competition’ is: “To strive against another, or others, to attain a goal, an advantage or a victory”.  But the word ‘competition’ originates from the latin ‘competere’, which actually means: “To strive together“.  From the latin ‘petere’ meaning ‘to seek’ and the prefix ‘com’ meaning ‘together’.

80 BnB Lovelies embraced the 17.6 deg water and 8 deg morning air today.  To ‘compete’ and become champions.  The goal…

Step onto the field fully present.
Find your direction.
Throw your heart ahead of you as far as you can.
Then run like the wind to catch it.
– Andrew

Confusing game of shirts and skins. Rusty in the home team colours.

Stephen closely marks his player…

Fresh onto the field and keen to get amongst it.

Sarah and Ros advance to the blogtart grand final.

Les is about to be tackled.

Cold from a rip in her wetsuit – or faking it for a foul?

Reputed to be a high scoring player…

Full-time refreshments.  Everyone’s a winner

If you want to win, you have to remember how to play the game.
Here are your coaches – follow their lead.

And win they did!  Congratulations to Elizabeth and Elizabeth.
A one-all draw for their winter without wetsuits badge 🙂

Meanwhile, it’s early morning in a seedy club somewhere, a poor drunk
with a bright idea is photobombed by the latest in flatscreen TVs…

So few swimmers made it to Shelly this morning, so blogtart opportunities were abundant!

Big shout-out to JK and Bill McP who, selflessly, forwent their 7am swims this morning to stay with me through extra time.
I would do the same for them if England or Scotland ever reach the world cup final. Hypothetically speaking.

yeah thanks for my mention Lips! I selflessly got up 10 minutes earlier to join you for the last 20 minutes of the game and left it to 6.55am to join the swim then ran straight back after the swim (freezing) to the warm Havana cafe to congratulate you!

…and the rest of us who selflessly relinquished the benches and tables outside MW to have our coffees (or soya milks) with you!

Yes yes, Lesbubbles and LSA. Very much appreciated your company too.
Not quite the same as giving up your swim though. Bill in particular was looking forward to his winter without wetsuit swim today, he told me. I am still moved to tears thinking that he gave it up just to watch the match with me. What a trooper!!
