13/05/2014 – Daily life

13/05/20147

The sound of the rain falling on the trees outside my window made the warm nest under my doona the most enticing place to be this morning.  However, the gentle snoring of the cat as his tuna perfumed breath enveloped the pillow did ensure that sleep was now a thing of the past.

Someone remarked this week that no matter what time they arrive in Manly, there is always someone out ‘doing stuff’ along the beach front.  Have you noticed this as well?  Here are the early lappers, or the Dinks Express, returning from their swim.

While the rain has ceased and the clouds were receding, bags and semi clad swimmers sought the sanctuary of the tables under the balcony.  At least 90 B&B’ers completed either the 6.30am or the 7am swim today.

While at 21.8 the water is not cold, it is always nice to be able to make your own way in without someone else’s assistance!!

Patrick’s help was really not appreciated by Cathy today, but not to worry he was given a dose of his own medicine.

The water was spectacularly clear at the point.  And so thrilled to see a Dusky swimming below us as we waited for the let’s go.  The Dusky Whalers have been very active these past few weeks.  Yesterday I spotted seven cruising together just off the pool at Fairy Bower.

An interesting crossing full of warm and cold patches!  A bit like with your shower in on the blink and the hot and cold water don’t blend.  There was also a stongish current coming out of Shelly which turned the last 100 metres into Shelly into a never ending swim!

All quiet at Shelly; no birthdays, no blog tarts.  Just the ever present tension of the few speed demons out to race each other back to Manly.  Don’t know why because you miss the best bits!

Like this cute fella! This cuttlefish was spotted just off Shelly.

Nick was keen to test something he had heard.  Apparently, so the theory goes, if you raise two or more fingers, the cuttlefish will respond by lifting the corresponding number of tentacles (if that is what they are called).

So what to you think?  Is the myth busted or proved? Do hope that Nick was not signaling an attack sequence. . .

And a few of the other regular fish. . .

Can you believe that it is only 18 swims until winter?  And you know what that means – more badge opportunities.  So what do you think?  Shall we do another onesie day on 1 June to kick of the winter season?

Have a great day, and see you tomorrow.

Mary

B&B i-Log

Really if you haven’t been using the B&B i-Log then you must be new!!  Almost 75% of swimmers are now using the B&B i-Log. Log your swim ANYTIME of day using this really efficient and easy way to ensure your swim is recorded in the daily attendance and on the Pacific Challenge. To get started, send an email to Ian Forster ugoboyo@gmail.com (This is not a link so please copy and paste into your email). He will check that your email address is activated on the attendance register then send you info on how to get started.

Staying safe

We have had seen the return of some serious waves and rips this past week!  Were you prepared? Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly!  While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits.  Do read these excellent tips on staying safe in the surf.  To read, or even download, click here.

Yes, for the late starters, slow swimmers, and Shelly chatter-ers, the giant (and I mean Giant) cuttlefish just off Shelly was a super treat.

Magic swim, warm, no stingers, and great blog as usual Mary. I think Nick proved the finger/Cuttlefish theory was correct! How about a few more fingers next time Nick? I wonder if the Cuttlefish has the same theory about us?

The cuttlefish is just finishing up his/her blog announcing a breakthrough in human/cephalopod relations…. as long as I didn’t say anything insulting

Ha ha! That cuttlefish was definitely holding up two tentacles! That’s brilliant! Love it.

    Great blog Mary.
Had no idea Nick speaks cuttlefish! Impressive performance. He almost looks like the real thing – hard to tell them apart!
