12/05/13 – Thank You Mum

12/05/201314

Today we get to swim in Mother Nature’s back yard and say “Thank you” to all those special ladies in our lives …..our Mums!

Mum to many …..Elaine with one of her own today, Charlie came along to support Mum today.

Lyndal brought along her daughter.

Lesbutt doing her best Mum impression “Tick your name off, or else!”

And here’s some pics of lovely BnB swimming ladies ….

14 swimmers managed a “Mum Double” and LSA took 6 on “The-get-in-the-water-before-mum-comes-along” early swim.

 Did you know?

The festival of Mother’s Day is celebrated across 46 countries, but not on the same Sunday.

The earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.

Here’s a couple of our Greek Gods …….

Ancient Romans got in on the act too by celebrating a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. The celebration, where offerings were made in the temple of Cybele,  lasted for three days and included parades, games and masquerades. The celebrations were notorious enough that followers of Cybele were banished from Rome!

Here’s some notorious Roman’s heading into the water ….

Here’s my ‘trying to be arty shot whilst getting used to the new camera’

A nice little tight group of people today, 205 swimmers thanking Mother Nature.

Lovely Mum and Daughter duo, Krystyna and Kara show us how to do it underwater style.

I was very lucky to be joined by people at Half Way today.

Shelly puts on her magic as always.

JK decided that all the Mums could go first, with a ten second headstart on the males…..

……Not that our Super Mums need it!

Go on Roz, that means you too….

James …you should be back at home supervising Mum’s breakfast in bed!

Underwater shots time! Unfortunately I was trying to locate the giant cuttlefish and so missed the turtle in the bay. Plenty of fish life around …..photographer needs to learn how to use camera though!

I did manage to get a photo of a gorgeously large blue groper. Did you know? All gropers start their lives as females.  See? Mother Nature has worked out who the important ones are!

You’ll all be pleased I managed the obligatory ray shot.

So, today ….remember to spend a moment and think about that special person in your life, yes that’s right … Your Mum!
Happy Mothers Day to my Mum way over the other side of the world!

Fancy treating Mum this week ? Join us on this Wednesday for drinks at Murrays……the Murray’s night out is a great time to catch up with your fellow BnB’ers and see them with more clothes on. Phew! Lesbutt may even leave her Onesie behind. See you there from 6.30pm.

On June 1 it’s the start of not only Winter… but the Winter Badges! It is a Saturday and so to ‘celebrate’ we want everyone to come down wearing a Onesie / Jumpsuit. The funnier the better!

Good show, Charlie and everyone who came along to support their Mum!
The other 5 female silhouettes in the early light all did an early Bouldercrawl with me for their first time, at a very relaxed, flipperless, pace …. Glassy water and gentle, rolling waves at Queensie. Thanks for the company and well done, Baby Jane, Jill, Sofie, Karin & Senta!

I did see a few other fish including a dusky whaler who was swimming quite near the top but alas camera and photographer took a bit of working out!

Rule 56A of the Greek God code of conduct. Let the mum beat you on Mother’s Day.
It’s the rule listed between the appropriate use of Yak fat 55C and the restriction of crop dusting 57A.

A great blog as always but I have to correct your explanation for the origin of Mother’s Day it was in fact a 16th Century Christian holiday celebrated of the 4th Sunday in Lent when people returned to their mother church, the main cathedral in their area to join a service on held on Leatare Sunday. It wasn’t until 1908 when it changed from a European Mothering Sunday to Mother’s Day when an American Anne Jervis campaigned to have Mother’s Day a formal holiday.
