1/11/13 – WOWSA! – It’s not what you think!

01/11/201313

Another Friday – a little grey but a nice southerly swell and flat and calm conditions for us today and looking forward to some clear water!

Manly has that sleepy feel (or maybe it’s me) on the way down to B&B Central…

Welcome to Laura, Rachel and Kevin – read the Ts and Cs by Ian here – “don’t drown.. all that stuff”

…and a quick publicity shot before heading out….

Today is a big day with some very high profile people returning – Ducky and Lips – welcome back!

Sky’s pants cost $2 in India, apparently – this is why they’re called Poo Pants

Apparently licking is the new thing…

The Stripey Goatfish are getting big…

Ssome Flutemouths loitering off the point…

Nice warm flat swim over to Shelley…

Thanks Mauricio for showing me this guy on the way back…. the Eagle Ray…

This is what happens when the lead Mullet is drunk…

This little guy is a Rainbow Cale – Normally shy and hiding in the weed..

Adult male Rainbow Cale can be recognised by the elongate first dorsal fin spines and distinctive colouration. They have blue lines on the head and dark blotches on the sides of the body.

Females and juveniles are yellow or green to reddish-brown with dark markings on the sides of the body.

The Rainbow Cale is a member of the subfamily Ocacinae. One of the distinguishing features of odacid fishes is that the teeth in both jaws are fused into a parrot-like beak with serrated edges.

And look who’s back – The Country Womens Association  😉

And our friend Smiley – the smiling grouper

With the triumphant return of Rainer (AKA Lips) We have renamed the halfway steps, which shall now be known as:

“Lips Ladder”

Here he is cutting the ribbon with literally thousands looking on and cheering madly…

So that brings us to the World  Open Water Swimming Association, where Steve Munatones has nominated us for “Offering of the year”

Staying safe

Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly!  While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits.  Do read these excellent tips on staying safe in the surf.  To read, or even download, click here.

Bold and Beautiful Swim School

Sarah Anne Evans, B&B’s official Pacific Jules swim coach, has organised a group swim school at Shelley Beach for any willing B&B swimmers who want to improve their style. The cost is $30 and it’s limited to 15 people. During the 90 minute session Sarah Anne and Warren Evans will be covering how to swim with more efficiency, flow and speed! If the water is clear and calm enough they will film each person for feedback after the session via email.

    Thanks Nick.
Moving ribbon cutting ceremony at Halfway this morning. Great to see what must have been thousands of onlookers lining the shore between Shelly and the Point.
Let me know if you want the transcript of my speech.

Hi all B&B members that swam this morning,
I found a B&B swim cap, goggles, ear plugs & watch that were left behind on a bench outside the surf club. Rather than leaving them there for unwanted hands, I thought I’d pick up and try and find the owner (no doubt they are having a slight panic that they have misplaced their valuable B&B swim cap (I mean watch). If these are yours, please contact me (Greta on 0404 044 690).

No laughing matter. You can catch all kinds of nasty things in the waters around halfway. Especially after heavy rain.

Glad to see you back – even if it’s just for the ribbon-cutting! Look forward to a repeat with the full speech when I return.
Now just remember, for safety, you’re meant to look at the steps and the waves rather than at the media cameras when you enter and exit at Half Way!
