It was two of our regular swimmers birthdays today, Shelley and Shane. It was another of those gorgeous Winter mornings with a stunning sunrise, a chill to the ocean but certainly a day you’d regret not getting down to Manly. Here’s Shelley at Shelly singing Happy Birthday to herself 😉 and of course looking much younger than she actually is!
Shane didn’t quite get to Shelly today but as his pre-swim routine shows he’s certainly looking very strong and supple, (for his age ;-)) here. Our swim definitely makes people look younger I reckon, or some, like me, maybe just feel younger!
The 6.30 swimmers head off under a beautiful sky this morning. The air was nippy at around 10 degrees and water felt nippier at 16.3, (Marco reported it was much colder towards Shelly).
Sailor Sid and Sailor Nicky arrived back safely from the start of their circumnavigation with Matt. They are helping at The Sydney Boat Show the next 4 days. Drop down and see them.
Michele and Martin cross over with 7am swimmers…
and so do Kathryn and Chris. It’s Kath’s 20th Winter swim so she’ll get her Cold and Beautiful badge.
Kath and Craig get in from their early swim.
The Clarke and Humel crew
Brave Alison, Lisa, Sue and Heather still wetsuitless after many more than 20 Winter swims!
Here’s Shelley aka Keebs sandwiched between Sue, Jane and Heather. Bloggers love Shelley because apart from being friendly, thoughtful and fun she often comments on our blogs, (although sometimes her comments do have a slightly smutty edge to them 😉 )
Ann with some chaps
We sing Happy Birthday to Shelley but Stacey manages quite a respectable photo bomb!
The men warm up post swim against the Surf Club…
…and the WOWS make a fuss of Shelley at the wall!
Ian thinks 210 pink cappers swam with us today on 1st August on a beautiful day!
Derek’s new dog, Bindi. He got her from an Aussie Working Dog Rescue Centre as she had been abandoned in Dubbo and was skin and bone when she was found. I’m sure Bindi will start to love coming to the B&B as she gets used to us!

This is a screenshot fro the short video clip below. It shows a dying Cuttlefish being picked apart by fish. I was lucky enough to come across this sight a couple of years ago. I know it looks pretty awful if you click on the link you’ll see all the other fish it attracts! There is a Smooth stingray and two Port Jacksons swimming in the same clip. Everyone else had swam North to avoid Jimbles, it was a great sighting!

The Cuttlefish Nicker
This is the naughty man I came across on Sunday when volunteering at Shelly Beach with Friends of Cabbage Tree Bay. He had taken a very recently dead Cuttlefish and was taking it home. Merri and I made him put it back as Cabbage Tree Bay is a no take Aquatic Reserve. The man didn’t speak English but had on a B&B cap and Manly Surf Club budgies. He’d obviously thought he could get away with taking things by wearing these and I’ve no idea where he got them from. Look out for him and others like him guys!
Thought I’d just include these 2 photos of the baby Port Jackson Shark that just appeared at Shelly Beach a couple of years ago! So cute!
Monthly Dinner – 14th August 2018 – Guest Speaker
The next B&B monthly dinner for the year will be held on Tuesday 14th August at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant. Our guest speaker on the night will be B&B swimmer, Brendan Maher. Brendan, who describes himself as a very average swimmer, managed to overcome a chronic shoulder injury and swim the English Channel in July 2017. He will speak of his motivation, training for the swim, and what it’s like for the average swimmer to attempt a marathon swim. This talk will be an inspiration to all of us who count ourselves in the ‘B Team’ (or even the Zeds!).
The cost of the dinner is great value at only $25 a head, which includes shared entrees, and a selection of mains to choose from (including a vegetarian option). Glasses of beer or wine and desserts are also available at the special price of only $5 each. Numbers are limited, so bookings are essential: To avoid disappointment and secure your spot please book HERE.

Winter Badge
Although the water temperature may be a little colder than you might like, there are several advantages of swimming in winter, including flat seas, good visibility and no bluebottles.
Perhaps the biggest advantage is that you can also qualify for a winter badge by swimming a minimum of 20 times between 1st June and 31st August.
You must also swim in at least 7 different weeks. If you manage to do all of your qualifying swims without a wetsuit (or other thermal enhancing equipment), you will also qualify for the coveted WWW badge (Winter without wetsuit).
So start now, and don’t forget to log your swims to qualify.

The swim certainly keeps me feeling immature, if not exactly young… high spirits are catching. Thanks for another fabulous blog, I feel very special being the cover girl.
There were dozens of crows pecking at the cuttlebones on Shelly beach this morning, made me feel a bit better about their demise. They’re giving back on land and at sea after they cark it.

If that is what Australian Farmers do to their loyal working animals..
i don’t have much sympathy for them…
