Marine Biology Corner :
SALP – Hey did you notice that we were swimming through patches of slimy little “beings”?
Well it was creatures called Salps. We get them at Manly about once a year.
Here is a link to tell you all about them.
http://www.antarctica.gov.au/about-antarctica/wildlife/animals/salps
Salps are gelatinous, mostly transparent, and cylindrically shaped, so look like jellyfish. They vary in size from a few millimetres at their birth and grow up to about 10 cm. One species is known to reach more than a few meters. Individual salps form a colony during the sexual phase of their lifecycle. The colony is long and chain-like in some species and wheel-like in others.
Key Stats:
Water Temp:18.7 degrees
Air Temp: 19 degrees
Newbies: 3
Swimmers: 170
Have a fantastic day and see you all tonight for John’s talk at our dinner.
Jenny :))

Thank you Jenny for a very informative blog! I know we are not meant to take any marine creatures from the Bay, but today I took several dozen of those pesky salps home in my cossie! Yuk! I wish I could get to the dinner tonight but am working. I’m sure it will be a fabulous and interesting night.

Great blog Jenny!
Love the salps. Big colony in the bay this morning. Must be the sexual phase of their life cycle. How exciting.

I hope the Salps are tasty and get the fish, sharks and rays out from under the rocks. Lovely blog Jenny with some very happy faces. It is Mental Health Day and we all know our swim is the best ‘Happy pill’ around.

THANK YOU! and “hi there” back from a member of the Bold & the Beautiful diaspora.. trust me, there is such a thing. This very faded pink cap is currently swimming the incredible sparkly crystalline waters of Sardinia’s costas – openwater swimmer’s heaven – but temporarily sidelined for a week with a self inflicted stab wound (eye roll). Desperate to return to the water and looking forward to revisiting the gorgeous South Steyne to Shelley swim with my lovely brother Bruce and the B&B-ers at the end of the year. I need a new cap.
