09/03/14 Badges galore!

09/03/201414

Welcome to a special Sunday edition, with excitement in the air. It definitely doesn’t look like Summer has finished, but the Summer Badge ceremony held in the grounds of Royal Far West, meant we celebrated the end of the qualifying summer swims.

A beautiful gorgeous day ahead.

290 swimmers joined us today, including 21 newbies.

The usual suspects, some just captured, some photo bombed and some asked to pose specifically to be in the blog.

Here’s the 6:30 / 7am change over.

Welcome to one of our first time swimmers today.

A short walk to reach the waves today.

A rather wide gathering at ‘The Point’

And sure enough, one by one everyone arrives at Shelly beach.

Glad they got up and faced the morning swim.

Enjoying catching up with friends and a quick chat during the break.

Whole groups joining together in their morning ritual.

….and then we’re off ….searching for sealife.

A very smiley Wobbygong.

And a catfish foraging in the shallows

As soon as our swim was over we headed to Royal Far West.

Penelope and the team welcomed us with a sausage sizzle. Thank you for catering for all of us.

We enjoyed the sausages!

Today we also joined the launch of Sydney law firm, Wotton + Kearney and FDC Construction & Fitout joining forces to help raise awareness of the great work RFW does with the children of rural NSW, by doing a three day cycle from Dubbo to Wagga Wagga.

The guys posed for photos and apparently last week, were waxed! All to raise funds for RFW.

They will cover 490km travelling a route from Dubbo – Trundle – Forbes – West Wyalong – Temora – and finishing in Wagga Wagga.

Ian and members of ‘The Management’ then started the ceremony off. A whopping 155 people qualified for a 6km badge and the first time ever, I was one of them!

48 B&B swimmers managed a 10km swim. Super impressive!

Thankfully we were all too excited to hear The Lips speech and he was moved on by the welcoming party pretty quickly!

Many came and claimed their badge(s).

Some were very happy with their two badges.

Some more than happy with their one!

Samantha Evans took the following photos of our excited swimmers.

Are these really his?!

Thanks to John Bond for organising many of the summer swims.

Well I’m off to find a spot in my hoody to sew on my badge!

B&B i-Log

Almost 50% of swimmers are now using the B&B i-Log. Log your swim ANYTIME of day using this really efficient and easy way to ensure your swim is recorded in the daily attendance and on the Pacific Challenge. To get started, send an email to Ian Forster (ugoboyo@gmail.com). He will check that your email address is activated on the attendance register then send you info on how to get started.

Staying safe

Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly! While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits. Do read these excellent tips on staying safe in the surf. To read, or even download, click here.

Great blog – of course, I was the “just captured” and the others were the photo-bombers and posers:-)
Such a fun morning and do hope any slow swimmers who are still apprehensive about doing a long swim will join us next year!
Actually, all special thanks to Jules for always encouraging me and the slowbies to buddy-up and “go all the way”, having lots of fun at the same time!

Oh my goodness, 2 badges and I wonder who has swim the furthest in the last 30 days?
Actually, I’ve only been back 25, so John Bond and James Goins and the usual suspects must have been slacking and Simon must have been taking too many holidays:-))

Excellent blog. I am so glad at the badge ceremony that Andrew thanked Ian, John K, Anne, Lesley and Pauline and others for all the stuff they do. I am also so grateful to Robyn, Sam, Sarah A, John Bond and the others who lead the swims in such a patient way that even I can join in. Thanks so much. Enjoy your badges all

The badges are a great way of encouraging us to get out of that comfort zone and do something we never would have thought possible. I would never have thought I could do a 10 km swim a year ago. LSA is always a constant motivator. If we can do it anyone can. We are thinking about an adventure swim from Quarantine Station to Watsons Bay before it gets cold. Anyone else up for it? Storchy has said he’d be support crew and we might be able to get Tony or Mike there with their boats.
Well done to Snorkles, not just for blogging but for getting her 6km badge using legs only!

This is all very well, but I’ve never seen any of these people in the water.

Beautiful ceremony. Spoiled only by Ian ungraciously cutting me off half way through my acceptance speech.
Great work covering both swim and awards ceremony Snorks!

From the point of view of a (relative) newbie, the idea of doing such a long swim seems daunting if not impossible! Maybe with the encouragement of all you nice B&B-ers, I can do it one day! Looks like it was a great ceremony – very impressive achievements! Well done all!
