08/08/16 – Information Immersion

August 8, 20164

Ever wondered why you feel more energised after a swim, even though the act of swimming uses up energy?

Well…
We classically think of the universe as consisting of energy and matter.  But what if there’s a third component, just as fundamental.

(yeah, yeah, I know.  Just flow with this for a couple more paragraphs, or skip to the last sentence).

Scientists have been struggling with the energy/matter thing since 1867, when Maxwell’s ‘Demon’ thought experiment indicated that information itself is able to reverse entropy and liberate free energy.  This showed that information was as fundamental, if not more so than energy and matter.

Information itself exists in all events.  Unpredictable and non linear events, such as those found in nature are extra rich in information.  You and I are natural systems, the ocean is also a large natural system.

Could it be possible that the act of immersing ourselves in the information richness of the ocean enables our own system to liberate free energy from within?

Congratulations Rhonda on your 1000km

The next B&B monthly dinner will be this Tuesday 9th August at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant.
The guest speaker for the night will be
John Sear, a keen local SCUBA diver who has been diving at Shelly Beach for over 25 years and made over a thousand dives there. In recent years his interest as an amateur photographer has driven him to start recording the fish species that can be found in the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve. He shares his passion through his website www.ctbar.wordpress.com which aims to help educate divers, snorkelers and swimmers as they explore our local biodiversity hotspot. His talk is titled “What Lies Beneath”.

The cost of the dinner is only $25 a head and includes shared entrees, a selection of mains to choose (incl a vegetarian option), corkage (for byo wine only) and a little thank you for the staff. Glasses of beer or wine and desserts are also available at the special price of only $5 each. Numbers are limited, so bookings are essential:  To avoid disappointment and secure your spot please BOOK HERE NOW,

Streetwork are trying to raise money (and awareness) of StreetWork Manly and to do this Jim Stackpool is helping organise a gig at North Manly Bowlo Saturday night 13th August. They’re charging $35/head (best beforehand using the trybooking site –https://www.trybooking.com/206959) or will also take money at the door – the fees includes food, not drinks and music from the 2WS playlist – i.e. three chord songs – we don’t know any others!

Come prepared to dance.

Fundamentally StreetWork work with kids in Manly ‘under pressure’ or on the street. They mentor kids one-on-one until they are ‘out of danger’ of self-harm, crime, drugs, or worst of all suicide. These kids are ‘usually’ living at home, but not in safe environments. They struggle for funds and like most charities are held together but a dedicated few doing a lot in their spare time. We’ll have one of the guys from StreetWork (they have two counsellors now and trying to get another – they can’t meet demand) at the gig giving a really quick story about what they do. As many B&B’s that want a night out dancing to us playing 1970’s, 1980’s rock’n’roll (three chords only) with drinks at pub prices.

Staying safe – a timely reminder!
Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly! While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits. Also, if you have a bit more experience, keep an eye out for new swimmers who might need company. Do read these excellent tips on staying safe in the surf. To read, or even download, click here.

WWW badge.
Please be aware that to obtain the coveted WWW badge, the only part of the body that is allowed to be covered by wet suit material. Are the feet (booties allowed).  Apart from the feet, the body should be covered in non-wet suit material.

Also, a reminder that the philosophy of the B&B group is that we are a group activity and that swims are only to be logged for swims made between the hours of 6am and the final 7am swim (or double or triple or other sanctioned swims). Swims are NOT to be logged outside of these times for social and safety reasons. Management.

Thanks so very much to everyone who supported the bake sale and came along to our walk yesterday and a special thanks to Anne Edwards who has been helping out hugely in the background, getting the ICMS (St Patrick’s) lit up, putting up posters and helping out along with her husband at the walk.
The tally for the walk so far is $31,783 and with your help we reached a big milestone – reaching $1m of funds raised from our walks held across the country since 2009.
I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such a caring, thoughtful, supportive group – you are the best!

Today on Margaret Throsby’s Midday interview (ABC Classic FM) heard a terrific interview recorded in 1999 with the great swim coach, Forbes Carlile… In which they discussed swim strokes, trends, etc. well worth listening to on a podcast if you’re interested.
