07/06/2014 – Spare a thought for our veterans

07/06/20146

Andrew Summers is a veteran of the Afghanistan war who, like many returned service men, has battled with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) since returning home. This morning he set out at 5 AM on a 40km walk doing laps of Manly beach carrying a 40kg pack to raise awareness of PTSD.

Fortunately for Andrew and the rest of us the rain abated and the skies cleared after such a dreary day yesterday. Goes to show that all things pass!

Water temp 19.1

Lots of swimmers

Andrew may be featured on channel 10 news tonight!

Bottom of the Blog – the very useful stuff

Monthly Dinner – Bluewater Cafe, Tuesday 10th June at 6.30 pm

This month’s guest speaker, Chris Miller, is a freelance cameraman who worked on the TV program Getaway for 20 years. Chris has travelled to many exotic locations where he has filmed both above and below the water. Chris will talk about his experiences swimming with Whale Sharks in Western Australia and cage diving with Great White Sharks in South Australia.

The cost will be only $20 a head and includes shared entrees, a selection of main to choose (incl a vegetarian option) and corkage (for byo wine only) and a little thank you for the staff.  All beers (including four pines beers!), wine and deserts an optional extra at the special price of only $5 each. BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL, so book here now!!

Lunch with greats of Rugby Union and League

On Friday 13, June, the Royal Far West together with Hotel Steyne Manly is holding a lunch from 12.30pm until 2pm to Celebrate Country Rugby in NSW.  Special guests include Glenn Stewart, Scott Gourle and Ron Pilon.

Ian is putting together a table for the B&B so please let him know if you are interested in attending by sending him an email to ugoboyo@gmail.co, or see him at the swim ‘cause he is there most mornings.  As the B&B is a special friend of the RFW we are being offered a 50% discount off the advertised price!

Winter Badge season kicked off 1 June.

You know you want one!  There are 14 weeks in the winter season.  To qualify for the prized Cold & Bold Badge you simply need to swim 20 times within the season ensuring you have swum in a minimum of 7 different weeks.  So, attempting to do it all in the first few weeks does not count!!

The Biggest Morning Tea ever

Help B&B regular Miguel Maestre (aka the Crazy Bull) fight cancer this May and June, and make this year’s Biggest Morning Tea the biggest ever!  Please share his video or maybe even organise one with as many friends as possible.

And don’t forget tomorrow, Sunday 8 June the B&B will be hosting a Biggest Morning Tea after the swim. This is to raise money for the Cancer Council. Just $500 helps fund essential research. So bring your money with you ’cause there will be an amazing selection of fabulous – and healthy – post swimming/ triple crown goodies.

    Great photos and blog Joe.
It could just be in my browser but for a few days now, the names of people who log their swims do not highlight in the Pacific Challenge when the page opens. Looks like there may be an error in the script of the Java app. Anyone else notice this?

agree with Elizabeth, beautiful swim today, despite the chilliness in the air. But all the doublers got rewarded with a bit of blue sky on their second leg.
Appreciate your fast and colourful blog Joe.
