04/06/13 – Clouds, pink caps and frozen toes

04/06/201315

Well here we are four days into winter with
103 swimmers, 24 of which did the early lap at 6:30am!

You can tell that there was a huge early
swim by the number of bags, shoes, ugg boots and attendant dogs left along the
wall.

With the atmospheric temperature at 9
degrees, everyone is just that little bit more layered.

Except for Paige.  She is working on the idea that if you stay ‘chilled’
you won’t notice the temperature of the water – well not as much anyhow.

Fear
not intrepid swimmers – with the water still fabulous at 20.4 degrees you
will not freeze!!!

The sun made an appearance during the
crossing.  It really made the clouds look
amazing,

and bathed the buildings at Fairy Bower is a glorious golden light.

Rainer (Lips) was the celeb ‘Let’s Go’
caller for today.  And we were all incredibly
attentive!

I have to say his projection
was perfect!  Here he is kindly
re-enacting his call for me.

Not a whole lot of fish out today.  Well maybe they were there but the visibility
was not very clear.  I can imagine they
were well pleased that they could go about their fishy business without all
those nosey swimmers. . .

Mind you Elaine was not to be put off her fish hunting.

And then the sun hid itself behind more clouds. . .

Beautiful winter swimming – two down; 18 to go.

See you soon

Mary

Monthly

It will be a hat-trick night at Bluewater tonight:

  • Awarding of
the first batch of the Pacific Challenge 500 km badge
  • Presentation
by Dr Ray Hodgson on his work in Nepal
  • The usual
    monthly dinner shenanigans. . .

In
addition to the excellent value meal of $20
for two courses, with $5 drinks, $5 desserts and no corkage for BYO wine
.
Bluewater has offered grilled snapper with sweet corn fritter, roast tomato and
rocket salad for $25 – but only if you
have booked.
Currently the event is booked
out!!  So, if you can’t make it – and have
booked – or want to come – but haven’t booked – contact Ian on 0412 331 530.

For the culture vultures

Kicking off at Glen Street Theatre this week is JACK CHARLES vs THE
CROWN. Uncle Jack Charles is an Australian legend: veteran actor, musician,
Koori elder, activist and, until recently, heroin addict and cat-burglar. This
is a show about his life – told by him. Only playing for four days from 5 June until 8 June.  The special offer for the B&B is $53 for
Adult evening ticket plus a free drink for all evening performances excluding
opening night. (That’s a saving of $10 off the full ticket price.) Please use
the codeword BOLD to redeem this
offer online or over then phone.

Another fabulous play on at The Stables is THE BULL, THE MOON AND THE
CORONET OF STARS.  It is a great performance
of a modern story with a dash of Greek mythology.  Well worth the effort if you are looking for
clever, witty play with loads of laughs.
Playing until 8 June.

Staying safe

While there has been little wave action to test the surf skills, you
never know when the sea will show its turbulent side.  Stay safe by knowing how to read the signs
with these water safety tips courtesy of champion Ironman Craig ‘Riddo’
Riddington. It’s a great read and can help keep you safe in the surf.  To read, or even download, click here.

Thanks for explaining what Lips was doing at Shelly – it was all very confusing from our end?
Was John doing the double today? Hmm. As JK said ..there were only two lines he needed to say and he got them wrong!!
Lips – I suggest you take some lessons before next time!

    Lovely pics Mary.
Izzy, Bill Hyman and I went to Glen St. on Sunday and they told us they had discontinued the B&B discount, though gave us a discount for goodwill (no free drinks though). So make sure you check with them when booking.

I forgot to tick (or W?) today. Pleeze, kind Integrity Police, can I be ticked off? Surely SOMEONE will confirm I was there. Anyone?….anyone?……

Lips was shouting about losing his virginity at Shelly … or something like that.

Lovely blog Mary. Think the photo of Rainer calling ‘Let’s Go!’ when a lot of swimmers have already gone is a contender for photo of the week! Manly is illuminated in background too!
It’s going to be a great night tonight but we are expecting 110 and it could get messy if people just turn up. (Plz text Ian if you aren’t going or want to!)

    Hi Elaine
Sorry but I’ve just gone through the bookings and it appears you’re not on the list.
    Somehow Sascha has missed you!
So Sorry, but you can book now for next time and I’ll personally make sure you get on.
Lovely blog Mary, rounded and intellectually fulfilling.
    😛

Let myself down by bringing the wetsuit this morning. Have rectified the situation by locking the wetsuit under the house so that I won’t be tempted to bring it tomorrow!
Determined to get my hands on a www badge this year…

Jane I am attempting to clarify the situation with Glen Street. Hope to be able to give you an update tomorrow.

Cheeky Snorks Monkey – if you attended the swim more regularly you would know that the phrase ‘if you want to do a double, meet john at the point’ is part of the shelly beach lets-go tradition and, according to B&B regulation #574, has to be uttered every morning regardless of whether john is actually present or intending to do a double.
