127 Bold & Beautiful swimmers.
A lovely little wave amonst the grey skies to kick start this morning’s swim.

into the beauiful calm waters across the bay with an ocean covering of duskies.

It seems there was plenty of discussion about their size at Shelly… 😉

and varying opinions on what it’s like to swim winter with out wetsuit… 😉

And then the good luck wishes and cheers to the team of swimmers embarking on a fantastic swim from Palm Beach to Manly today before we head back !

Thanks to Magnus you can check out how you and your friends are going in the 2012 B&B Winter Challenge via a link within the daily attendance titled ‘2012 Winter Challenge’. It’s pretty damn cool !! 190 individuals have already completed at least one winter swim and there’s 90 days left to go ! Check it out to the left of the blog anytime or via the link here
Plenty of other acitivity going on for you to join in, with 5 swimmers also enjoying an early lap, 7 continuing on for a double afterwards and a few continuing up to Queensie and back !
Now onto the Palm Beach to Whale Beach swimmers today !!
Gaetan reported in that it was dark and boring as they gathered at Palm Beach this morning 6am, but at least they had the paper to read 😉

Good luck to all of you and as always most importantly – enjoy it 🙂
Hopefully we’ll receive updates throughout the day on the blog so you have a rough idea as to how each boat is travelling and their ETA at Shelly Beach this afternoon if you’d like to meet them there or give them a wave along the way.
A couple of reports already in:
- Ted saw them off Avalon at 9.08am
- Maureen saw 2 swimmers and 2 whales off North Bilgola Lookout at 10.09am which is pretty exciting. It seems that all’s going well so far.
Alternatively if you’re on twitter you can follow them: @palmymanlyswim
Collie also sent a message to say that his team of swimmers, that’s himself, Ben and Brendan may have to farewell their boat (which has bright orange paint work) at Freshie estimated to be ~4pm so if anyone is keen to accompany them for the last stretch from Freshie to Shelly on a board, in a kayak or swimming alongside them, they would definitely appreciate the support.
It will be an extraordinary sunrise this coming Wednesday morning as Venus will pass in front of the sun which will be visible for us at sunrise !!

The next sighting won’t be until year 2117 so if you wan’t to see it what better opportunity that combining with arriving early for a swim 🙂
For more information please click through to the link here that Jeff Lange kindly passed on. It also has ideas for viewing boxes, as of course you can’t stare directly into the sun !
On a completely different note, after a shocking day on Thursday with car dramas I ended up at R&G Automotive in Brookvale yesterday and the owner, Ray was soooo helpful and obliging. If anyone else has any car dramas I can highly recommend calling these guys to begin with… on: 9905 5818 or 0412 433 160 or (if you can…) drive to: 2/228 Harbord Rd, Brookvale. Ray, even said he would join us for a swim 😉
Water Temperature 19.2

oh those sharks are so adorable. On the early lap one glided by so close to my face that even I, Mrs Magoo, could make out its facial piercings, in the form of a double hook. 🙁
POOR creature!

Check out the winter swim badge.
Its quite awesome and shows about 190 people are “on target” – ie have swum in the first two days of winter.
This is absolutely AMAZING. What a great bunch you all are.
The other amazing thing is the transit of Venus on Wednesday morning. We in Australia’s east coast will be able to see the whole thing.
Did you realise that this was the reason Captain Cook came to the south seas and discovered Australia? Lots of other fascinating things surround it – it was proposed by Halley that the Astronomical Unit could be measured by observation of the transit. He needed this to develop lunar tables for navigators to determine longditude. Never happened of course because of the advent of accurate clocks.[Harrison]
PS. DON’T LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN.

Manly Cinema is showing the film of “Phantom of the Opera” at 11am tomorrow (Sunday). The full performance was filmed at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It might be the best place to be if it’s still pouring with rain (apart from snuggled up in bed).

PalmyManlySwim finished. Weather closed in forcing most out around Mona Vale. Tori, Alistair and Anna successfully finished in around 9 hours. Full update later. Well done to all in challenging weather.

it was not too bad but a few simmers got sea sick and then with the heavy rain the visibility became so bad that we decided to get on the boat just before Long Reef. So we did about 15km, 10km too short though 🙂
But way more exciting than the swim were the 2 whales just 50m away from our boat on the way back, very cool!
Woodie mentioned the whales were breaching in the morning close to the boat (swimmers did not see anything) and it took a nice video of the whales.
But hang on, since Woodie fell off the boat shortly after that, we will never see the video nor will his camcorder and iphone ever work again!!!
thanks Woodie for coming along to look after us, I’ll happily give you my 6 years old Nokia tomorrow, you deserve it!
:-))
